Grrl Power #1392 – Fundamentals > Flash
Yes, fundamentals are more important than flash. It also helps if you juuuust enough super speed to make the other guy appear to be moving in slow motion.
Action pages are hard to comment on, because there’s usually not all that much happening. Sure, someone could pull some crazy new Jutsu out of their ass, but if that happens, that means you’re in for 12 pages of flashback to justify how the character suddenly has the perfect skill for the situation he finds himself in but for some reason has never mentioned before. (Yeah, Naruto, I’m looking at you.) Sydney’s not plumbing the depths of fantasy, sci-fi or superhero tropes, and the “so dumb they could only have survived to their current age because it’s a sitcom” character isn’t doing something dumb.
So, enjoy the oh-so subtle Street Fighter homage and feel free to discuss that time you brought all your best moves to that game of Street Fighter II Turbo Excel Hamarabe Fried Chicken in the arcade, and some unassuming guy stood there on the player 1 stick and whooped everybody’s asses by stuffing all the super moves with Jabs and Shorts and leg sweeps. Or vent your outrage over my Naruto drive-by.
To be fair to Naruto, I’ve only watched… actually it’s been a while. I think it was most of the first season. But my memory of it was that in 20 or so episodes, about 3 seconds of actual time passed, and the rest of each episode was flashbacks to them learning some Jutsu. That or the pink-haired ninja girl was having some internal, possibly boy related anxiety attack? I found that part fairly amusing, actually.
Ooh, look! A new vote incentive! And it’s updated with color!
Well, in progress, obviously. I have another one that’s actually a bit further along, but everyone was all, “Sydney Kobold vote incentive!” So I switched to this one. Plus the other one was a multi-character picture so it will actually take me longer to finish. I hope to have an update for this one each week, so stay tuned. There is a slightly higher res version on Patreon.
By the way, this gunmetal blue-ish background and teal pencils are how I draw the comic. I set it up this way so I don’t have to spend all day staring into a bright white blank page.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. Feel free to contribute as much as you like.
Maxima seems to have already forgotten what happened the last time a stygan lost to a super: the price of winning will be much higher than loosing…
Losing would cause him to demand that treatment, which would be more problematic.
And they can just swap out the Glowbod if he becomes a problem.
Or Maxima can call the station police for harassment, because she isn’t into that.
No, no, no.
When dueling, one must master witty repartee, not boring lectures and grandstanding.
“First you’d better stop waving it like a feather duster.”
“Too bad no one’s ever heard of YOU at all.”
“And I’ve got a little TIP for you, get the POINT?”
And, of course, the timeless, the elegant, the ever-so-sophisticated…
“How Appropriate – you fight like a cow.”
Honestly, it’s like he’s not even *heard* of pirates…
… hehe … take the sword. hand it to someone else. then ask “two out of three?”
after third win. ask him “IF, you want to know how to fix this.?”
Balance? she can fly.
Speed? She can catch bullets.
Strength? She can lift and throw concrete bridge pillars.
Defense? She can stand at ground zero of tank-busting blasts, and catches bullets without even hurting her hands.
Attacks? She can point her finger at a Fel Battleship and blow it out of the sky.
Max is not just superior. She is an entirely different order of life-form. While the interaction of personalities is somewhat engaging, the outcome of this supposed fight is more like Max making a choice about whether or not to squish a bug and how much to toy with the bug first.
It will be an humbling experience if she encounter a Dr Manhatan scale super … an 11 on the Grrl power scale with many rank 6 powers
Watching Naruto was your mistake. The show is mid, like early One Piece. Read the comic. The plot is thebsame, but at least the art is gorgeous. Kishimoto has a wonderful way of making his landscapes feel lived in.
If you want an Grrl-verse street fighter Deep lore cut tie-in, Sydney drives a Honda Element. A small, stout box… a Sumo Wagon. An… E. Honda.
The Tatewaki Kunô school of swordsmanship… sorry, I meant grandstanding.
You talk too much, you worry me to death,
You talk too much, you even worry my pet.
You just talk, talk too much.
You talk about people that you don’t know,
You talk about people wherever you go.
You just talk, talk too much.
You talk about people that you’ve never seen,
You talk about people, you can make me scream.
You just talk, you talk too much.
Soit on escrime et feraille
Soit on jase et rimaille
Mais lors d’une battaille
C’est d’estoc et de taille
Same type remark in french … translation
(Either we fence and fight
Or we chat and rhyme
But in a battle
It’s about thrusting and cutting)
If you think the first 20 episodes of Naruto were bad then DON’T watch Shipuuden ever.
I honestly enjoyed pretty much everything up to the decisive battle between Naruto and Sasuke, after which Shipuuden began (after a ton of fillers). You should finish watching season 1 because Haku was such a cool character.
