Grrl Power #408 – Oranges, Golds, and Purples
This is one of my favorite pages I’ve done in a while, just cause I’ve been negligent about slipping in pop-culture references lately. (harder to do during PT, etc) So I thought I’d dump a bunch all in one spot. Hopefully you guys will have fun trying to identify them, but a few notes. Most of these are pulled from comics, movies, etc where there is a definitive version to replicate here. Some of them are gimmies, but a few of them are from books that don’t have movie version yet. So I used either a cover painting as reference or a replica someone made that features high on google image searches, so there’s some slipperiness there. Also, the two handed khopesh at the top is a sword of my own design for a character that might eventually show up in this comic or another one, in a fantasy universe where I have infinite time to draw (or at least write) multiple comics, so don’t kill yourself trying to ID it.
There’s obviously a lot of weapons I could have included in Deus’s collection, but I mostly went for some of the most recognizable ones, with a few more obscure weapons thrown in for good measure.
Imagine if Deus told Sydney he was going to scrap them all for legendary crafting materials. I don’t know what her reaction would be to that since she’s still trying to figure out what he was implying about them being replicas, or if he was messing with her since he knew she would take the bait.
Normally I reserve the double res pages for the Patreon folks, but today’s page will obviously benefit from the extra size if you’re trying to identify the swords, so have at it. I’ll post this as soon as I wake up (Patreon doesn’t have a way to schedule posts yet.) Actually a wallpaper of that panel might be in order, so I may put that up as well if there are requests for it.
In the meantime, here is a numbered version so people don’t have to describe “the sword next to the one on the stand – not on the middle of the pedestal, but the one next to the (incorrectly identified) sword.”
Edit: There’s now a wallpaper sized version over at DeviantArt.
Here’s the link to the new comments highlighter for chrome, and the GitHub link which you can use to install on FireFox via Greasemonkey.
Replicas
well maybe the original prop/cast of the item described. But yeah not real functioning as described otherwise even in a Supers world, Deus would be Ded.
If you’d made the numbered sword page your voting incentive, you’d have a zillion hits by now. Just sayin’.
I suppose I cold have, but I try and keep that sort of stuff as accessible as possible.
Even so, Ctrl + C, then Ctrl + V into a graphics program works too. That & the fact that the page will still display regardless of how many times per day you vote to see it; the vote only counts once.
It’s still easily accessible.
Yay, Ruby’s Scythe, from RWBY, one of the most epic weapon in a world of epic weapons
Sorry but he would not get the original even if he “tried” to kill her.
Damnit, Deus! Stop making me like you! X)p
Hmmm, it’s a less well-known franchise, but the Shadow-Blade from Spellforce would have been awesome on that wall :-) (dunno if anyone’s ever heard of Spellforce outside of europe though….which is a shame, since it’s a really good game series! #Runewarrior #Shaikan)
Not sure which is more impressive, the wall of swords or the sexy henchwoman that appears from the shadows on command.
I guess I have a couple more things to add to the list of what to get when I win the lottery.
Nice to see all those weapons, but I’m gonna have to call Deus on something. Most of those are replicas. The real ones are bigger. Notable examples are Crescent Rose, which is goddamn enormous and much bigger than it shows up here, Cloud’s Buster Sword, which is also bigger than the version Deus has, and Soul Edge over on the left, which makes the Buster Sword look downright believable.
And if they are smaller, then they become physically usable as weapons, and not just mere replicas.
Hmm. Hmm. Hmm. Hmm. Hmmmm.
Replicas can be battle-ready or not as long as it replicates something else. That said, many funky-looking fantasy weapons are shaped in a way that makes them horribly impractical and awkward compared to historical equivalents.
I’m pretty sure he’s messing with Sydney, unless these were physical manifestations of the weapons plucked from the dreams of the authors or forged from the collective conscious using the abilities of a super. They could also be shape-shifting magic weapons that he put in this form.
Deus would totally put real superweapons in plain sight like this. Still, I’m going with the “messing with Sydney” explanation.
They’re just further away. @.@
So 10 if from Bleach unless I’m a fool, also 19,20 and 12 look really cool, where are they from?
19 is the Sword of Omens from Thundercats and 20 is the Master Sword from many Legend of Zelda games. I don’t know 12.
Also, yeah 10 appears to be Zabimaru from Bleach.
I’m surprised you didn’t add the Soul Reaver (https://www.omegaartworks.com/images/omega/thumbs/375-soul-reaver-sword-other-2.jpg) as one of these swords after the debacle of naming Dabbler’s sword.
So, what, Deus can visit alternate realities and those are the actual weapons? Or are they just replicas and he decided to channel his inner Beast Wars Megatron when asked if they were replicas?
After reading all the comments, I’d like to point out that number 20 isn’t “just” the Master Sword. But more exactly the Master Sword from aLttP. After that the sword’s hilt was recolored to purple/blue.
There’s a big difference between a ‘replica’ sword and a ‘live steel’ replica sword. To comic-store-owner Sydney, she’s used to the collectible gewgaws that would break two seconds into a fight. These are probably Deus indulging his inner geek plus an unbelievable amount of money, which is to say, even if these aren’t the originals, they’re live steel, which means you could pull one off and have a one-on-one with an unexpected ninja that just came into your office.
Except for Soul Calibur. If that isn’t clearly a replica, Sydney’s reaction to a flesh-y blade made mostely out of meat should be, ‘Hey, Soul Calibur! Cool! … Wait, ewwww!’
Always. Expect. Ninjas.
Live steel replicas would still be replicas, just a rare subcategory. Several of those would be sub-par weapons if he had to fight ninjas, even if they were live steel. There is a reason that real swords are less flamboyant that fantasy spiky things.
I don’t doubt that they are live steel replicas, however, my thought is that Deus is probably wealthy enough to find a way to enchant, or enhance each of the blades to preform the functions they did in their respective creative universes of origin
*fangirl squee*
Loving 10) Zabimaru from Bleach and 13)Buster Sword from Final Fantasy!
It would be so cool if the Keyblade from Kingdom Hearts was there too (or maybe Riku’s Soul Eater).
Was hoping for Blackrazor or even Lilarcor… but you can only have so many swords I suppose :)
Sacrilege!
That’s on his other sword wall. You can’t just have one, otherwise if it gets too big it just starts to look cluttered.
Hm. Notable by its absence, Xena’s chakram. Inadequately phallic or something. ;)
Maybe it was too hard to pick which one to get?
Hey, Dave. Can we get a wallpaper of just the swords? Thx, mate.
I see Sid has her fight/Flight under better control she did’t try to deck Vale..
I wonder if Vale and Peggy go to the same hair salon?
Deus’s VA is definitely David Kaye in my mind. He’s do a deep, refined voice with just a hint of menace and a flair for dramatic crescendos. Basically he’d be Megatron.
Reminds me of a character I came up with who could summon up to 1,000 swords from Hephaestus’ (Vulcan’s) armory. Many of the swords he could summon are inexplicably pop culture references.
It’s my belief that Hephaestus is a big fan of anime, comics, video games, and movies.
Fate/Stay Night influence here? :D
Watch it – it’s fun.
What makes you think he didn’t create the originals??
You didn’t include the Sword of Power from Dreadstar? Fie on thee!
It would’ve been hard to hang up a blade that’s made entirely of energy, ya’ know…And not only that, there’s no sheath other than Dreadstar’s own soul.
no Soul Reaver? hmph
Oh my god, oh my God, oh my God! Ruby’s scythe AND Riddick’s ulcas?! This man likes to live dangerously. Oh, and all the other stuff, too.
My addition to the collection wold be D’Argo’s Qualta Blade from Farscape.
How is it that Buffy’s scythe is not up there?
What, no lightsabers?
It would really be hard to be ambiguous about whether they were replicas or not, unless you just had the handle, which isn’t all that impressive in a display like this.
Well, not entirely impossible…
https://force-fx-lightsaber.com/
The first I was able to name and happy it in the collection, the Eye of Thundera embedded in the Sword of Omens.
Without looking at other comments these are the ones I recognize.
Ruby’s scythe Crescent Rose from RWBY. #4
Bilbo and Frodo’s sword Sting from LotR. #14
Bat’leth Klingon weapon from Star Trek universe. #24
Master Sword from Legend of Zelda. #20
Dawnbreaker, daedric artifact of Meridia from TES:Skyrim. #22
The Green Destiny from Crouching Tiger, HIdden Dragon. #12
I feel like I have seen or should recognize numbers 2, 3, 5, 18, 10, and 11, but I don’t or at least not enough to remember the source.
Alright. I recognize #2, 3, 4, 9(i think. I think it’s Excalibur or something), 10, 11(Aragon’s sword?), 13, 14, 15, 18, 20, 22, 24.
I think i recognize #1 from Riddick, but i’ve never seen or played it, so i might be very wrong.
#22 annoyed the hell out of me, because i knew i had seen it before, lots of times even, but i couldn’t remember what. Then it dawned on me :D
#5 and 6 also tugs at something, but i can’t remember what.12 reminds me of Highlander. I think 16 might be Blade’s sword, 17 honestly makes me think of Warhammer for some reason and 19 is pissing me off, because it’s just sitting there, laughing at me trying to remember it. I have absolutely no idea what #7, 21 and 23 is, though i assume 23 is a stake from some kind of Vampire thing
Offhand, I spot a sword rom Bleach, Thundercats, and clouds old sword from FFVII. Also, the half scissor I think is from a clothing obsessed anime who’s name I cannot recall. That’s also gotta be a Klingon weapon at the bottom….
It’s the Scissor Blade from Kill a la Kill. Well technically half of it, but the second half is more iconic than the whole pair.
Needs more Frostmourne (or maybe Ashbringer).
Deviating from everyone else talking about the weapons…I just want to give a shoutout to your colorist, Dave, because the colors are spectacular. Not just on the weapons, but everything else, the background materials, the folds of the clothing, and especially the subtle pastels of the orb lights glowing off Sydney’s hair.
Well done!
And now I feel particularly sleazy as what I’ve spent several minutes admiring is the coloring and shading of certain prominent parts of Vale in panel 7 & 8…
Do Maxima and Deus have a history?
They explicitly do, although there is some disagreement between them about what sort of history. And we have no idea whether either of them is within a light-year of correct – let alone which one.
See previous comic page.
Ok, without looking in the thread:
1: Riddick’s Knifes
3: Tachikiri Basami (Kill La Kill)
6: Stormbringer, but then the blade should be black, I think.
11: Anduril (LotR)
13: Cloud’s Buster Sword
14: Sting (LotR)
16: Sword Of The Daywalker
17: Atlantean Sword (Conan)
18: Excalibur
19: Sword of Omens
20: Link’s Master Sword
21: He-Man’s Sword
24: Klingon Bat’leth
“16: Sword Of The Daywalker”
Literally, it’s Blade’s blade…
:)
First – First panel is awesome and needs to become a background image in high resolution.
Second – Genre-savvy hero meets genre-savvy villain and they begin channeling Arsenio Hall. Sweet.
Third – Vale. Yummy from the neck up (really like pink hair with blue eyes). A little on the the overkill side from the neck down in this panel – no idea why it’s hitting me so differently since the art isn’t al that different from usual. Sydney’s reaction is priceless.
I laughed when I saw #9. Ah, Dokuro-chan. The sheer bloody absurdity of it.
One of my favorite pages with the exchange between Sydney & Deux.
And while I don’t think I’ll spend time on the sword IDs, cool deal.
Wait… you’ve got everything from Souledge to the Sword of Omens, but I don’t see a single lightsaber hilt anywhere on that wall. That’s the biggest oversight in the galaxy.
…In which galaxy? Certainly not this galaxy.
;)
The bat’leth is actually Bat’leth, AKA the sword of Khaless not just any klingon bat’letth.
Pretty sure #7 is the Marc Singer’s throwing weapon from Beastmaster. Literally the first movie I saw on our brand new Betamax in the 80’s. Unfortunately, I can’t remember what it was called.
