Grrl Power #1231 – Dark The Mighty Halo
I think everyone guessed this page was coming. Also, it being a 4 panel mostly full of Lapha reveling, I expect there won’t be too much to really talk about, other than how Sydney is getting another stamp on her “Things that happen to superheroes” Bingo card. This is separate from the “Make Maxima Say” bingo card (that hasn’t been revisited in a long time, admittedly.)
The next page more or less returns to the higher panel count, but I’m not done with experimenting with different layouts. I’d like to get caught up on the Vote Incentives and I’d like to do more writing, like Tamer: Enhancer 3 and other original books, but I haven’t had the time in a while. I think maybe one or two lower-panel-count pages a month might help me out toward those goals, so I’ll probably mix them in on occasion.
The new vote incentive is up! Crimson and Scarlett have a present for Ingsol!
It’s them, they’re the present. They’ve decided that “Sire-versaries” are a thing and Ingsol has to be convinced this is a good idea each time. Everyone thinks his pair of names-that-are-synonyms-with-red sirelings who are both women and who were both turned in that age range that ensure peak hotness means he’s a dirty old man, but he actually isn’t. It just worked out that way. And don’t forget that while it looks like there’s a 25 year age gap between the girls and him, it’s actually much worse, as he is 700 years old, while Scarlett is something like 180 and Crimson is only 40. But at the same time it’s meaningless as they were both fully adults when they got turned, so it’s all copacetic.
As usual, Patreon has the pair of them in various states of undress.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. Feel free to contribute as much as you like.
Sydney made plans for how to handle Evil Max; did she also make plans for how to handle Possessed Sydney?
Batman did for if Batman ever went rogue.
He has several plans actually in place for this:
His primary plan to stop himself was creating the Justice League in the first place (which he admits to Superman in Justice League: War).
He has a secondary plan in place where Batman’s alternate persona, Zur En Arrh, constructed a robot capable of stopping him known as Failsafe.
His tertiary plan are the Robins, since each Robin surpasses Batman at a specific aspect – this is according to Batman himself, that if they were to all band together, they could form a team capable of stopping him in every aspect of his strengths.
He also has a plan which he only told Superman about, in a box which he gave to Superman – it’s not mentioned what the plan actually is, but Superman was very hesitant about it and did not want to ever do it.
—
However, Sydney’s not the one who created ARCHON, while Batman -was- the one that created the Justice League.
Maybe they can throw a pair of mittens on her hand before she throws up the shield. :)
That last one seems like a bad idea, since it possibly gives Superman a way to circumvent Batman’s plan to stop rogue Superman (if I were Superman and I went rogue, the very first thing I’d do would be to stop Batman)
Did you read Irredeemable? This is exactly what alt-universe superman did to ali-universe batman
No; it just seems like an obvious flaw. A case where the writer isn’t as smart as Batman
The plan would likely take into account that Superman may turn evil and attempt to use the plan. Just like it’s got to include the possibility that evil Batman is fully aware of what the plan contains, and would therefore be able to act to prevent it.
But honestly if we’re into a realm-space where the Justice League and the Robins have been neutralized, and Zur En Arrh and the robot are both stopped. We’re left with a limited number of options for ending the threat. So it’s probably something incredibly silly like “Fly around the planet backwards very quickly. Eventually you’ll go fast enough to change the rotation of the planet, causing time to flow backwards. Stop when we get to a point before I was possessed, then kill me.”
Batman actually has more than one method for stopping Superman.
Not just the kryptonite he has sd s normal weapon (both as bullets, the kryptonite ring, and as a spear). He has a method for using a red solar radiation energy beam, a mixture of poison Ivy’s pheremones mixed with kryptonite gas (which he got the idea from when Poison Ivy did so in Hush), a kryptonite-infused mixture which would be inhaled and bonded to his blood (which was used by Green Arrow in The Dark Knight Returns as part of an older Batman’s plan), a Batman Exosuit which is capable of fighting a Kryptonian on their level, magical means via Zatanna and Zatarra (Damian used one such method to defeat Gotham Girl), the Atom taking a kryptonite shard and going into Superman’s brain (which was used in Injustice, but unfortunately one of Superman’s allies wound up killing Atom), and the Doomsday Protocol, where Batman developed a toxin to turn him into a Doomsday, capable of killing Superman (which he did in an alt universe and killed Superman within a few seconds by tearing him apart).
Plus he has multiple psychological means and allies who he might call upon who have ways to counter Superman, including Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman, although one of his counters to Wonder Woman happens to be Superman, and one of his counters to Martian Manhunter happens to be Plastic Man.
I came to realize that this might not be as big of a problem as it seems. Sydney needed time testing the orbs, even with her genre savvyness, to figure out what they could do and how. They don’t impart knowledge of their capabilities to the wielder.
Also, it’s possible they’re linked to what amounts to Sydney’s soul, which would not be what tries to activate them during a possession.
Tertiary plan is so many ways flawed: it relies on the Robin’s banding together, when at least half of them dislike each other, and all of them hate Damian
Primary plan has already been neutralised: he has plans for taking out all of the Just Us League
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/_jnj-K-Iph8
Also his plans for taking out the Justice League are all non-lethal. Vandal Savage altered them to make them lethal.
This claim that batman created the JLA is actually highly amusing, since in actual JLA history, Batman and Superman were invited in only well AFTER the JLA was made. it was more a place for the secondary DC heroes to hang and get into adventures together, the big names were only allies, not members, at the start.
So, yeah, that’s a huge retcon claim.
The early ‘Superman’ of the League was actually the Martian Manhunter.
I think Superman and Batman were in the first JLA story (fighting Starro the Conqueror in The Brave and the Bold #28) but they weren’t common in JLA stories for the first few years
They weren’t regular parts of the earlier Justice Society of America
Ugh. gods I hate the whole Batgod thing.
This is quite possibly the most satisfying counter-image ever to that ridiculous idea: https://st3.myideasoft.com/shop/cd/03/myassets/products/142/91qja44bghl.jpg
Yeah, gloves. Mentioned it in her first interview. She has to actually touch the orbs with her hands to activate their effects.
Or, presumably, just swing a bag above her head and tie it shut. You can’t actually take the orbs away from her but if she can’t touch them then there’s very little she can do.
She can still move them in what’s basically telekinesis, so she could use the bag as a weapon unless it’s strong and attached to something or held by someone strong.
I am curious about the lack of a better term… Meat puppets.
Without a host entity are they like doomed to waste away, do they breath and rest.
Are we talking Avatar rules or are they not like a living thing at all?
Since they’re actually manufactured for that purpose, one assumes they fall into a sort of hibernation state when not occupied, where they don’t have a lot of physical requirements.
But being biological, they’ll still have some. Probably in the warehouse there’s some guy who has to hop from body to body on a regular rotation, eating, excreting, doing stretching exercises. He gets “not going to the bathroom” breaks…
Good gawd! Eye drops… For the love of… Eye drops!!
Kinda curious myself. Are they like a car, only moving & doing anything while someone is in control, and simply a limp ragdoll when nobody is? Or freeze essentially into a statue? Just an oversized paperweight?
Is it an actual biological entity of some type? Automatic life sustaining functions like breathing, heart (or equivalent) beating, waste and nutrients processing, all hard programed into the body?
We know they can be custom made to personalised specifications, but do they grow/age/mature over time? Is it adapting to the user’s personality, actions and habits? Bulking up beefcake style for a gym-junkie or growing a gut on a couch-potato? Or are they like a prosthetic limb, needing to be modified/replaced as the Being’s situation changes?
Exactly, if they can exist in a lord of the rings style tower… I guess we can assume they do not need to biological functions to exist.
Is the body pure function, it’s a simulation of those needs and not actually biological at all. Maybe they break down if not used or stored correctly.
I mean, that is a good look for her.
Completely agree!
It would be kinda comical (though a bit of an anti-climax) if the orbs just went inert now, leaving Lapha having to face Maxima with nothing but the powers of a regular human girl.
Or we might see what happens if an unauthorized mind tries to grab one of the orbs, perhaps she’ll get shunted out and it’ll be revealed Sydney is still vulnerable to mind control, but at least the orbs can’t be misused like that.
Nah, the anti-climax would be that this is Syd having fun, and Lapha isn’t old enough to be able to take control.
Unless Sydney has the power to manifest cat eyes, that seems unlikely
Garamm showed the same effect, even though eyes are normally blue, and Lapha couldn’t take control from him. https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-930-emergency-escape-lizard/
It could even signify contested control.
I don’t know what happened here, but I meant to write Garamm’s eyes are a more subdues yellow.
Pretty sure that’s just a sign of cohabitation.
If you want to go dark, Sydney discovers the only way to defeat Lapha is to psychically consume her. Then Syd has to deal with emotional fallout of being a soul cannibal.
I was kind of expecting an unknown orb function to be revealed by this attack.
Guess I was wrong :O
There still might be one activating when she tries to use the orbs.
Otherwise Zephan will need to supply her with an anti-possession amulet in the future.
It’s not over yet…
That would still need at least a comic for the setup.
Indeed there are several questions regarding Lapha being able to access the orbs, if at all, especially the state of her the sphere-grid, which depends on what (whom) the orbs are actually tethered to.
The funny thing is, that probably Lapha does not even know herself, since she waived grabbing the shield orb immediately (provided she even knows which one that is) for uttering an evil laugh. Which, knowing Maxima’s speed, might even suffice for her to arrive and incapacitate the possessed body, though this could have been done by Harem already.
100% harem would know a few grappling moves. the real question would be do any of those moves involve keeping the hands unable to grip anything.
We’ve seen that Sydney at least is able to cause the orbs to move to her hands, so incapacitating her through grappling would be difficult. So it comes down to Lapha being able to control the orbs
Also use the orbs as blunt weapons, so grappling moves or not, Harem can’t take on Laphney if she’s in control of the orbs.
https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-500-bravery-in-the-faces-of-danger/
Even without gripping the orbs she can move them around to smack people. It would be more effective to use the sedatives from the Vehemence brawl.
It would be more anticlimactically comical if the orbs were still under the control of Sydney’s mind, even while Lapha controls her body.
[Lapha!Sygndy grins and grabs the lighthook orb.]
[Lighthook wraps around Lapha!Sydney’s hand and wrist, binding it to the orb, then winds around her ankles, sending her into a faceplant.]
Does anyone else think that is shouldn’t be that Harem making this call?
Y’know, so that the possessed evil Syd doesn’t know that Max is on the way.
Yeah…
Also, since Lapha’s original goal was to possess Max, maybe not bring Max within proximity of her.
actually if Harem was being smart, she would teleport all her selves to Sydney
Tackle her, handcuff her, mitten her hands, and then call Maxima.
But what is likely going to happen, is Sydney is still awake.
she will likely use her ADHD to sensory overload Lapha/Tenri.
Sydney will likely get the upper hand in some way.
Or just teleport in with a binbag and sweep all the orbs.
I would expect all five of the Harems to be calling for all of the help.
Yeah, that occurred to me. She should have done it with one of her other bodies, and feigned ignorance as to what was happening.
A little bit more urgency might have been in order, too.
Supervillain Halo sounds fun.
Supervillain Halo is an Apocalypse Maiden
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ApocalypseMaiden
Only if we rank Lapha as an Eldritch Abomination possessing her.
I like this turn of events. Go evil Halo! E-Halo?
Evilo.
so, no chili?
Yes chili, the Ms. Boonliang 5 star “us” special.
It probably will burn out Lapha, but only when she already had half a bowl and it’s too late to stop all the scovilles from taking over.
“The burning, the burning! I am a flame entity, but this is too much!”
You are forgetting: it’s still Sydney’s body
“That is not what I meant at all;
That is not it, at all.”
https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-1224-sickubus/
So last time we saw Lapha in/on someone else’s body we were told that she couldnt do anything if the person who’s body it was resisted, nither of them could override the other if the other onjected. I’m curious about what changed?
She just lied? Besides, even if it was true, Sydney doesn’t know that. On the other hand, we haven’t seen Sydney try to resist yet.
It’s cofirmend by WoG:
“And if so, why didn’t she just toss herself onto Maxima’s head?
The answer is… kind of, but not really. Basically, she’s not “high level” enough to straight up possess someone. Right now, she’s somewhere between a Trill symbiont, sharing knowledge and memories, and Steve-Martin-bonked-on-the-head-by-a-mystic-bowl. They’re still separate entities, and both have control if the other one doesn’t object. She, and most of her species are relegated to passenger if the host doesn’t want to play along. The more advanced members of her species have increasing levels of primacy” https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-931-escape-from-new-york/
“Besides, even if it was true, Sydney doesn’t know that. On the other hand, we haven’t seen Sydney try to resist yet.”
That’s a good point. Perhaps Sydney is trying to simply push out Lapha, without realizing it (probably) isn’t possible, but eventually she will change her approach and fight for control over her body.
If she can access Sydney’s memories, then a lot of the folks who were thinking that the learning curve for the orbs would be a hindrance are going to be shocked to discover they were wrong. :( This is definitely a no bueno situation.
Even if Sydney can maintain control, there are things in her mind Archon wouldn’t like Lapha to learn.
Maybe Sydney isn’t resisting the evil cackling villain laugh, because of course she isn’t.
Or Laph got some kind of upgrade since then for the specific purpose of this plan.
Plot twist: Sydney is still in control and is laughing at the feeble attempt at possession.
It is possible that she has leveled up in the meantime (particularly since she presumably had a willing training partner to grind…. Skill levels. To grind skill levels.). It is also possible that she was wearing magic suppress-host-consciousness lipstick
Keep the “kiss” in mind as it was completely unnecessary for her to transfer to Sydney.
Lapha might have pushed some kind of chemical into Sydney’s mouth to numb or suppress her mind so Lapha could more easily take over. Although, with how Sydney’s mind has reacted to mind altering chemicals in the past, I wouldn’t care to think what this one might result in.
I’m sure this is gonna go well with all those previous posts about Sydney making out with demons, kiss a demon get posssed. The conservative media will eat it up.
*You have opened 411 new tabs, this program may encounter some stability issues.*
That’s what I am expecting to see happen, have the possessing entity try and cope with Sydney’s brain.
Exactly my thought. Let’s see Lapha try to deal with the brain chemistry that is Sydney. *Evil cackle*
Fingers crossed it turns out the orbs are attached not to Sydney (the body), but Sydney (the person), and Sydney (the body) can’t use the orbs without the right driver in the seat.
Alternately perhaps the makers where more cunning and only SPECIFIC orb functions can be used freely, for biological safety such as the atmosphere orb producing a breathable atmosphere but minimal else?
Syd’s kinda been in need of a wakeup call that she isn’t truly unbeatable. Concretia managed to immobilize her, but this time, she’s gonna be hurting the people she cares about, and be in a front row seat, so this might convince her to stop trying to take everything on herself. She’s part of a team, and she really DID bring this one on herself by acting without telling anyone. Here’s hoping hse doesn’t end up losing something permanantly…
Or at least she’ll finally take the damned shield orb passive.
But Sydney definitely doesn’t need to get more shy about kissing.
Since Syd is not using the orb just yet, I expect Harem to spawn at her back and use a taser, ior some other highly potent body incapacitation tool. And mittens.
The Mitten Gun (TM) – it fires mittens…somehow.
Or just, you know, a garbage bag. Gather up the orbs and Sydney’s just an ordinary* girl.
*For some definitions of “ordinary.”
dramaaaaa!
I think we’re about to learn using those orbs correctly is a lot harder than it looks.
Sydney did mention early on having done alot of experimenting and practice once she figured out how to turn them on.
LaphaSyd: MWAHAHAHAHAH- wait, how do you use these th-
*Harem hypos LaphaSyd, LaphaSyd collapses*
Harem: *into comm* Nevermind, Max, I got ‘er.
I assume Lapha is going to try Sydney’s new “instant win” move and immediately discover it won’t do a whole lot to Maxima.
She might also try to use all other orbs against Max just to find out that Max at full power can shrug off all off them.
This is assuming she actuall inherits Sydneys ability to use the orbs and they aren’t just glorified lightbulbs atm.
I sincerely doubt that Max can beat Sydney even at full power right now. She was very impressed with Sydney’s shield when they first tested it, and it has been upgraded since then (iirc from the kaiju battle). She can probably shrug off any offense, though. What actually makes Sydney a threat to Max is her genre savviness (in other words, her brain), so Max should not have a problem with Laphney.
Nah, Maxima would win. It’s just a waiting game. Maxima can’t break the shield but eventually Sydney would need to eat or sleep.
This is Sydney Scoville. I am sorry, but I can’t some to my mind right now. Please let your name, number and a short message after the beep. *BEEP BEEP BEEEEEEEP BEEP*, you *BEEP*ing *BEEP*!
[Communicating in the 2.8 GHz range]
Red Orb: Hey, where did Mom go? She was right here.
Blue Orb: Well, she did move or teleport. She couldn’t have left us behind.
Brown Orb: Oh, no you don’t. I’ve got Mom, but someone is trying to take over our host. My turn for indomitable will. What did Mom call it? Oh, yeah. Saving throw: Wisdom + 25! Get out of there, you free-loader. We were here first.
I really like this :)
2.8Ghz is just above basic Wifi and Bluetooth, 280GHz would be much more impressive.
280 GHz is getting close to low-end microwaves, so maybe not the best idea to have surrounding your brain
Or in your brain…
Or maybe
Brown Orb: Finally! Someone who knows what they are doing, do you know how hard it was to remain passive all this time?
i am kinda expecting this to turn into ascene where they switch place to speak a bit like the final confrontation between the 2 persona in nutty professor.
I’m wondering if she’s laughing at whatever Sidney is saying in her head, or maybe just reacting to whatever medications she’s on… or not on? Her brain seems to me like the sort of place that takes some getting used to
Oh, I just realized it could be Sydney laughing meat the terrible attempt at hijacking… let’s hope that’s the case
OH Goddess.! Yes.!! Tamer Enhancer 3 Please!!!
i literally just Reread 1 & 2 ,. for the umpteenth time!
useless info,. cover #2 insert Xylyn.. she’s on the tree, to the right of Sam, at his hair line / brow..
jus sayin..
This goes back to the very first few issues:
Just because you have my powers doesn’t mean you know how to use them.
She probably can’t access Sydney’s memories and/or reflexes. Nor does she instinctively understand the control glyphs that Sydney has memorised. She’s likely to reach for the wrong ball.
Also if she’s running her consciousness off of Sydney’s hardware, she may suffer some of her ADHD issues without having any coping mechanisms for it.
Unexpected. I wonder if she’ll experiment with the orbs to see what they do? I can see Lapha doing a lot of damage with the PPO (assuming they even work for her).
Be really funny if she grabs the brown one and it gives Sydney control back/kicks Lapha out somehow. :D
I wonder if there was an orb purchase that would have prevented this.
Maybe under the Shield Orb? There’s three different paths, and having it under the ‘passive’ point/purchase makes sense. The other one that makes sense is ‘true sight’, but that might just be identifying posessions… which Sydney might not have noticed, due to not holding the Orb, unless the Passive is a Danger Sense thing. The perils of having orbs only work when you’re holding them, and they give useful information! Less of a peril than having the PPO work without being held, given Sleep Firing.
‘Course, it could also be an unlock that’s gotten either from the truesight/Shield linkage point, or unlocked from purchasing it and needs to be purchased separately.
Either way, hope Sydney at least gets a point from this. Maybe as an automatic point, similar to what she got for pushing her powers not… too long ago. In-verse, at least. (I mean, she was already ‘robbed’ of the extra point that was mentioned in the author notes, for the PPO, due to mistakenly being shown as already there. But then, that’s just a presumably forgotten, non-binding promise.)
Also possible would be her getting a point to freely spend. Too bad Sydney still doesn’t have labels for what she’s buying. Or a manual. Maybe some work has been done in decoding some of that 3D bit, when she’s leveling up? If Sydney has been able to pull that up, or not. Would be nice to figure out what some of those options are.
Orb-to-orb links. Unknown, non-purchased paths (including mystery passives). Still yet to be figured out paths that DO have points stuck in them. Whatever mystery is behind the pie slices one (which might be ‘new orb’). The currently still unknown orb (which… might be related to ‘power generation’, given the zigzagging.) And also the faded out paths, which may or may not even be able to have points put into them. The ones that even have slots showing, at least, given some of them it doesn’t appear to have them, near as I can tell. Whatever that one option, off the Warp path of the Flight orb is, with the double line connection.
But then, having labels would mean that she couldn’t get a purchase, figure out what it was, then complain that it would have been really useful to have ages ago.
And if there’s a true ‘manual unlock’, from using the orbs and figuring it on your own, rather than dumping points in and unlocking that way… Well, I imagine that it’s in the manual that she doesn’t have. Would be pretty hilarious if the unlocks are really simple to figure out on the first. Presuming it wasn’t just an auto-spend of a point she just got.
It may be since Sydney is so scatter-brained she’s a natural -5 resistance to mind-control. Maybe Lapha and lizard dude profiled her and were targeting her specifically based on that.
So Lapha just installed her mind into Sydney’s neurology, how much of an impact is under medicated ADHD going to have on her? Or does Lapha’s species not use the hosts brain?
I’m wondering what kind of effect possessing a mind that is wired with ADHD would do to the possessor if they aren’t use to the differences in the function of the brain due to the brain chemistry. As an ADHD person myself I’m rooting for the ADHD superpower being the solution to this problem!
I’m waiting for the reveal that one of the orbs actually deals with possessing entities and when her parasite makes the mistake of trying to activate it the orb ejects, destroys or imprisons it.
We know the host retains their faculties… So I am curious if the orb is bound to her soul/mind or if it is just a physical tie.
If the former, then Lapha is in for a rude awakening when she discovers that controlling sydney doesn’t get her any powers…
If the latter, this could become a whole “thing”.
Given that we know the orbs can be drained of power, this may come down to Max trying to burn through her shield till it runs out of power.
I just thought of that TV movie that was on ABC, TRILOGY OF TERROR where that girl got possessed by that Zulu doll.
Sydney has that same look. Freaky.
Can we just acknowledge that the smile in panel 3 is unnatural.
Oh no, there’s an alien in Sydney’s head… I pity that poor alien.
Thing about this page is that it would be exactly the same if Sydney totally stonked the mental battle and is in full control
“What kind of development” “Weird demonic entity passed out after kissing syndey. now sydney is grinning and cackling” “Did she forget her adhd meds again?”
If Max shows up suddenly and gently squeezes Sydney’s hands together palm-to-palm that’s it, even if Lapha’s got full control. Being bonked by the orbs isn’t going to hurt Max (If they could generate those kinds of forces they’d have busted out of Anima’s shell) and she’s fast and strong enough to keep the position while avoiding space-kiss. If Lapha can’t control the orbs mentally the way Sydney can, Harem could do the same, though I understand if Daphne doesn’t want to get in thwacking range to bet on that.
Oh…..shit.
“How many of these have I wanted to do? Let’s see…

Harem needs to drop a a copy for extra strength and try to aggressively hold hands with Sydney, or maybe call in a couple extra copies to pile on jic
While I guess this is to be expected at some point, I hope this alien doesn’t spend too many pages in control of Sydney’s body. Honestly, if it’s given a chance to actually learn how to put her orbs to good use, I don’t see how anyone on the team will be able to stop it from at least vanishing without a trace and taking the most powerful items in the known universe with it.
