Grrl Power #1383 – Kobold you didn’t
I can all but guarantee there is a message board somewhere that the dog-kobold and dragon-kobold people wage holy war upon each other. But I like the dragon kobolds. Mostly because I can find more cute pictures of lizard-folk halflings than I can of were-hyena-halflings.
Hmm. Not really sure what else to say about this page that doesn’t basically spell out the next few pages. I mean, obviously, holo-disguise montage incoming, right? But, uh… yeah. I’m really tired tonight, so I’m going to leave the rest of the commenting up to you guys.

I liked lizardy kobolds back from the dawn of D&D. As a DM, I saw they were lawful[evil] & while so many I knew treated them like a joke, I had them work cooperatively – much to many-an-adventurer’s woe.
Plus I let them USE the potions in their treasure hoards. Nothing like having a mid-level party see some kobolds – who saw those noisy lads sauntering up, so they could prepare – and then fight kobolds who had dosed up on heroism or giant strength. ^_^
People that think Kobolds are jokes should experience Tucker’s Kobolds.

give her a rack of draconic horns in the shape of her current hairstyle in the same color as the scales
Or, turn the hair into feathers of the same style and keep the color.
I don’t think their holotech does invisibility very well, so you’d either have to cover up the hair with something else or leave it as-is. Plus this isn’t going to be her disguise – she’d stand out too much as a cute giant kobold – so Fritz isn’t going to go through the hassle of making that part work. That’s my guess, anyway – maybe kobolds in the Grrlverse have hair. I mean, they’ve got boobs (hooray), so why not? Hmmm… I wonder if it manages making her digitigrade with something akin to hardlight high heels? would that mess with her balance? Or am I wrong and invisibility is something their holograms can manage well?
As for options to make it work, pinning her hair down with headwear and/or hardlight forcefields and making her disguise’s head a touch bigger to cover that would probably suffice. Well, unless the unbindable nature of her hair (flashback to the bobby pins flying all over the place) is sufficiently strong to break through even xenotech hats and forcefields, which I wouldn’t entirely discount as a possibility.
FUN FACT: Lizardy Kobolds is entirely D&D’s fault. In the original myth, kobolds have dog-like features. Hell even D&D portrayed them as such in their earlier editions. Likewise, kobolds’ ties to dragons are entirely D&D and not part of any myth at all.

I disagree with the dog myth. No myth that I am aware of has kobolds like dogs. Some are shapeshifters, though.
Kobold is German for Goblin.
But in folklore, they are a generic term for domestic sprites, such as poltergeist or pixies, and can be helpful or mischievous.
Their appearance can be varied, but is primarily humanoid.

The dog-like appearance is as much a modern re-imagining as the lizard-like appearance. They’re a category/generic name for creatures in Germanic folklore that may otherwise have been called sprites, gnomes, goblins, brownies, or any of a panoply of other names. And while they were usually not depicted as animal-like, when they did take the forms of animals, neither dogs nor lizards were at the top of those lists. Indeed, the primary contradiction present in analysis of their earliest descriptions is whether they should be described as childlike or elderly and bearded.
Got a source for those original myths? The ones I’m familiar with cast kobolds as being like little wrinkly blue gnomes. Miners who encountered this weird blue ore (cobalt) tended to die mysteriously, so it must have been the sneaky kobolds poisoning or cursing them.

I was wondering if anyone was going to point that out. I’m reminded of an issue of Teen Titans that required a stealth mission. Nightwing, former partner to Batman, was a master of disguise and unrecognizable. Except he was standing next to Starfire, a seven-foot tall alien with orange skin and extremely long red hair who was wearing a pair of dark glasses…

I find it interesting how the holo-disguise incorporated Sydney’s existing clothing; it’s not the exact same top and or pants but the same colors. The real question here is that if the holo-disguise is supposed to be able to block various scanners, why do they need to worry about replacing their earth-material clothing at all…? It either invalidates the previous page’s discussion about cotton being a giveaway (because they can just holo over it) or the clothing is more susceptible to detection than the actual body shape, including newly added limbs/appendages/tail?
For that matter, Sydney’s tech-glasses might be a known quantity by now; are they vulnerable to getting remote-hacked and having her visual/location/search history skimmed?
But yes, well done on both the alternate form and expressions for Sydney – even at a glance it is still very clearly her and not her at the same time!
The issue with the fabric is not just visual. Cotton might shed fibers, which would be then be left outside whatever space-tech disguise they have on. If those fibers turn up in an air filter or something, it could trigger a telltale (for “unknown origin”, if not specifically Earthly origin), and lead someone to look more closely. Seems like an outside chance, but since they thought of the possibility, covering it is reasonable.
Obligatory objection to a “lizard” based creature having hair and visible/large mammary glands. I guess the hair could be feathers, but the boobs are out of place. Especially since she would be trying to blend in with other of that species and they are much larger than Sydney’s natural shape.
An explanation would be that this isn’t a viable disguise, but is instead something Frix prepared specifically to make Sydney look hot/cute. Also fan service, which is appreciated :)
Looks more wallaby than kobold to me.
The sole alien race credible for Sydney is the salarian from mass effect :
due to hyperactive metabolism; they think fast, talk fast, and move fast, and the ADH could pass for non-linear thinking.
But the size could be a problem a small salarian female perhaps ?
Maxima as an Aria T’Loak of mass effect could be amusing two.
Sydney could try to disguise as an Ætholith since their bodies come in varying shapes that could be set closer to her own and as a bonus Sydney has some of Lapha’s memories to carry her through.
Good idea, since Ætholiths can have any shape or form thanks to the absolute arbitrary of their bodies.
It also has an obvious drawback for high security environments.
Temporarily switching bodies would probably be mandatory for them, because hiding weapons and espionage equipment in your body is too easy(you thought full body scanners and cavity searches at airports were intrusive, try to imagine a situation where one has to be afraid of internal organs replaced with drugs and scanners.)

When I read Sydney’s last exclamation, in my head I heard the voice of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer from the old Xmas special of the same name.
I noticed that her disguise didn’t hide her orbs….is that going to be something that they address in coming pages, that her orbs are disguise-proof, or was that just a case of ‘don’t bother for simplicity’s sake for a demonstration’?
Her old disguise technique should be sufficient.
Stuff them in a bag or poster tube(although I would this time put effort in making the bag appear filled with food and other non-suspicious stuff)
Digit is going to chibi A LOT and get triggered by Sydney A LOT.
God knows if these 2 brainstorm how to hack alien tech, the laws of physics will cry themselves in a corner while Maxima rolls on the floor laughing yellow….
