Grrl Power #1388 – Mouse averse
Sydney: “I’m just excited for a cool space adventure. Also I just totally got my oil changed by my space boyfriend, if you know what I mean.”
Max: “How ever will I crack your encryption?”
Sydney: “Dipsticks…”
Max: “Yes, thank you.”
Fun fact, an Alsatian is another name for a German Shepherd. Another fun fact, Germany has had some issues with P.R. in the last century. Or… century and 11 years. Yeah, we’re past the 100 year anniversary for World War 1. Anyway, at some point, probably slightly after the start of WW1, some people decided that German Shepherds didn’t benefit from the association with that “Great War” nation, and started calling them Alsatians. Mostly in England, I think. And the final fun fact, the only time I’ve ever heard the world Alsatian in my life is in that one episode of Blackadder where he tries to rewrite the dictionary in a single night. Granted, I’ve watched the full run of Blackadder about 35 times, but it’s still a little weird that while I was writing this page, the first, and in fact, only word my brain came up with to alliterate with “alliterating” was “Alsatian.” I mean, I only needed the one word, and Alsatian is perfectly cromulent, so I didn’t really strain myself trying to come up with another word starting with an “A.” Or really, an “AL” because that’s more alliterative? That assumes that alliterativeness is a spectrum and not a binary quality.
The Vixen War Bride series has an audiobook out for book 2! I’ve said it before, but this is one of my favorite Xenoanthropology-ish series. I just enjoy books where the aliens are flummoxed by human behavior. Granted, the aliens in this series are under the misapprehension that the humans are a race of slavering, epitomized evil aliens that nearly extincted them 4 millennia ago, so there is quite a speedbump in opening up friendly relations. Also I enjoy that the author was definitely in the military, because the level of military incompetence and bureaucracy is at that “stranger than fiction” level that can only be achieved if someone has lived it.
One more thing to pimp; If I had to pick one webcomic to definitively say has the best art of any webcomic, it would have to be “I Roved Out in Search of Truth and Love” It’s a weird title, but it’s got pretty good action and… well, it’s also like 35% sex. Let’s not pretend that’s not a major draw. Anyway, they’re doing a hardcover book kickstarter that isn’t on kickstarter thing? I’ve never heard of Zoop, but eh, I wanted some nice good art hardcover smut comics, so I thought I’d let you guys know about it.
Ooh, look! A new vote incentive!
Well, in progress, obviously. I have another one that’s actually a bit further along, but everyone was all, “Sydney Kobold vote incentive!” So I switched to this one. Plus the other one was a multi-character picture so it will actually take me longer to finish. I hope to have an update for this one each week, so stay tuned. There is a slightly higher res version on Patreon.
By the way, this gunmetal blue-ish background and teal pencils are how I draw the comic. I set it up this way so I don’t have to spend all day staring into a bright white blank page.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. Feel free to contribute as much as you like.
Alliterating Alligator is more alliterative, and yes, I do think there’s a spectrum.
There’s no need to worry woeful wordsmiths over their altogether aggressive alliterative aspirations. Though perhaps pun prevarication can prevent protected parody prosecution?
And while not strictly the most accurate alliterative avalanche the amusing appeal of wonderful wordplay pleases personal preferences.
And now that I’ve gotten that QUITE out of my system for the moment. I’m interested in what general chaos they’re going to incite and what the going odds are on WHO is going to break their cover. I mean Sydney seems the obvious choice for her attention deficit ooh shiny tendencies but it’s entirely possible someone treads a bit too firmly on Maxima’s boundaries and gets bounced quite boldly (okay, maybe it wasn’t as out of my system as I thought).
I think this is the first scene we’ve ever seen where Seneca wasn’t actively snacking… That was more jarring for me than the futurama reference :P
I just assume she has gumdrops in her mouth in the panel she says gumdrops.
Dot’s a nize hat hyu gots!
Where is this from? It’s tripping something somewhere in my brain, but it’s been so long that I can’t remember what, and it’s bothering me.
I think that is how the Jaegers in the webcomic Girl Genius talk.
You remind me of the alien in empowered.
Sexy superheroines and alliterating nerds commenting on it. It’s like reading Empowered.
That said, interestingly enough, at some point near where your alliteration has consumed whole related words, some people cease getting that alliteration tingle. Does something that’s seemingly seamless seem like alliteration? One of my high school English teachers insisted it doesn’t. I’ve talked to others who agree that it does. Two college English professors I studied under disagreed with whether it was. I think the younger thought it is alliterative and the older said it wasn’t, but that wasn’t nearly as memorable as that first encounter with someone who thought it wasn’t, so I could have them backwards.
“Seemingly seamless seems” like alliteration on some level but is sharply degraded in quality by the phonetic repetition. Augmenting alliteration adequately is the sense of a shared something and a different something, and “seem/seam” is all the same, but “Aug/All/Ad” is diverse enough to be pleasing to the tongue and contrasting to the mind.
but then you run into trouble, as technically Alliterating Alligator’s actually assonance…
as alliteration refers to the repeating consonant sound, whereas the repeating vowel sound is assonance…
the most obvious choice really lmao
The homages are just flowing today! Love the Futurama Amy/Leela wrestling match outfits!
I caught that too! Hoo boy that strappy boob top.
Somewhere I have a vague memory of the Rescue Rangers TV show…honestly I remember the DOS game more.
I feel like knowing the reference to Gadget dates me…
Rescue Rangers was my jam when I was a kid. Watched it all the time. And now the theme song is playing in my head.
Gadget awakened nearly as many furries as Robin Hood did.
Less than half of all furries are attributed to cartoons. The majority are attributed to an oriental title version which probably will get filtered if I speak it. I’ll just take my chicken and suit neck adornment and leave.
If you follow in certain circles (and not all of them are pr0n-based), Gadget is far from dated.
And there was that surprisingly decent Chip and Dale movie from last year.
Gadget, my love, my first crush. I literally just wrote a thing where I went to a toon world because my husband told me I needed to go there to pick up one of my wives.
Cleo from Heathcliff/Catillac Cats for me.
Oh… I am sure that company has space lawyers… on retainer… with secret shuttles ready.
All that said, the German Shepherds are great dogs. If they interest you, check out the American Alsatian. I know, it seems weird to name a breed after two places, but as a product of modern selective breeding, it’s amazing.
Yup, called it. I knew Harem wasn’t going to keep that laugh contained to one body.
YES MOUSE
Digit: “What if I call myself Doctor Hackwrench?”
I heard that the best sure for diarrhea is to post a comment saying that you’re making brand-new, original comic strip featuring Marty the Mouse and Danny the Duck. A certain animation studio would promptly shove two dozen lawyers up your butt, and you’ll never be able to poop again.
Always avoid atrocious alliteration, asshole.
Agreed, alliterations are absolutely awfull.
Perhaps people prefer puns.
Don’t demonize deserved descriptor demi-duplication, dick.
The Marx Brothers’s father was Alsatian.
Just call it “fanart” and enjoy the tooth grinding of the opposite side.
Also… Some times, some crimes…
I’ve been reading IROISOTAL for at least 8 years? I think?…I dunno…BUT…I love the artwork…and the smut…The lead protagonist Half-Elf is one of the best characters to root for…Sometimes the plot is a little tricky to follow…but that’s usually due to the lack of bloodflow to the upper brain…
I happen to be into some forms of kink, and the artists ideas have lead to some pretty fun scenes…for those that take the dip and dive into the story…keep an eye out for the gimp girl with her head locked in a cock box…*thinks back wistfully to the scene with the homemade box of same intent*…yep…great comic…highly recommend
No shade on IROISOTAL, but for best art I’ve got to go with Kill Six Billion Demons for best webcomic art. No sex to speak of, but the action is truly epic. In the current ongoing battle, the corpses of dead gods are being used as warships.
Alsatian pretty much just means ‘of Alsace’, and Alsace is a territory on the border of France and Germany, currently French, although it changed hands a lot for about 300 years following the Thirty Years War. It also refers to the language originally spoken there
Also worth noting, the Alsatian language still has a decent sized population of native speakers. They just all also speak French and German.
LMAO! I had the same thought from the day you introduced her! lol. I’ll grant you, I still enjoy watching when my wife gets the giggles ;) Or any lady for that matter :D
I’m convinced that mouse is responsible for the modern day furry culture
You might be right. However, having said that, that mouse was not anywhere close to the first furry instigator. Furries have been with us for a long time.
The Egyptian goddess Bastet for the win!
Their gaming art in the Lancer RPG is up to the same high standard as Kill Six Billion Demons. Just phenomenal.
….Cheetara…..I CANT believe people leave Cheetara out of such discussions..
I think they spell it Jitara, but eh. English phonics.
OMG, Digit was going to be Gadget???
That back view is unmistakeable… that would be AWESOME!!!!!
That’s why her name is Digit btw (her actual name is Maxine). Mr Amorphous gave her the name Digit when they were vigilantes because it was ‘close’ to Gadget apparently. Or more likely Digit misheard what he said where he said Gadget, and she thought he said Digit.

Something just occurred to me – wasn’t Math supposed to be undergoing exposure therapy to overcome his weakness to Jiggle-Fu? Sure, he’s a natural-born horndog, but that seems like something he’d want to be able to exploit through his opponents thinking they could still get away with it. Or perhaps he’s done that already…
Is this lampshading? It seems lampshade-adjacent. Ironically, no shade if it is. It just seems interesting to think about whether “directly citing your inspirations” qualifies as lampshading.
Oh I thought that was Dabbler as the pink skinned one, just realized it was Harem on this page. Also…. Digit as Gadget… is fitting as it is cute.
Even in space you arnt safe from Disney’s lawyers, that and it makes me imagine like in so many years when this mission is declassified digit being personally sued for bring a copyrighted character to a space deathmatch
“alsatian” is also a great insult in France, since the French in the Alsace and Lorainne were notorious for flipping flags during WW2 depending on which forces were coming through….until they had allied flags flying when the Germans came through. :)
The House of Mouse has lawyers EVERYWHERE.
I like Maxima’s look in the last panel. Just seems to capture her aesthetic to me.
There are two companies you should never doubt the legal prowess and capabilities of. Disney and Nintendo. Maxima made the right call. They are the only two companies insane enough to take on Deus in a court of law, and possibly even win.
They never beat South Park at least.
IBM’s lawyers were nicknamed “The Nazgul” for years. Then the SCO lawsuits happened, and IBM was suddenly on our side for once.
Anyone else bothered by Jabberwokky’s shoulder on panel 4? It looks somehow disturbing like if she had a shoulder pad underneath her skin or something…
That last panel brings back memories. Also I’m sure a fair number My generation hit crushes on Ms hackwrench
Great use of a group mind giggle-snort, but mostly I just loved seeing Math and his reaction.
A friend of my parents had an Alsatian in the late 1950s, when I was 6 or 7 – it lived in our greenhouse for a couple of months while he was trying to get a flat that allowed dogs. I don’t think I heard the breed described as German Shepherds until I was in my twenties. I should probably add that this was in London, where public opinion still associated Germany with air raids etc. that soon after WW2.
