Grrl Power #181 – Power UP!
:)
I’m so tempted to leave just the smiley as the comment but, well you guys know I can get a little verbose in these. I really enjoyed designing this, and yes, I know what all of the nodes do. I have an Illustrator file with a very spoileriffic text layer. :) It turns out that Maxima was correct about Sydney leveling up – just in a more literal sense than she knew.
I’m the sort of guy that enjoys designing skilltrees recreationally. Diablo II is one of my all time favorite games. It had a pretty basic skilltree in it, until the 1.10 patch that added the skill synergies. Personally I’m ambivalent about how skills worked in Diablo III. It has its merits but being able to swap skills out whenever you want dilutes player agency IMO. Currently I’m enjoying Path of Exile quite a bit – and it has a rather unique skill system. The actual abilities are either random drops or quest rewards, which I was leery of at first, but after a few playthroughs you start stockpiling skills and can build just about anything you want. The interesting thing about PoE’s skilltree is that it’s all passive abilities – a massive, interconnected web of abilities, rather reminiscent of the Final Fantasy 10 Sphere Grid.
After playing a little Path of Exile, I almost went back and redesigned Sydney’s skilltree and made it far more complicated, but decided to leave it as is for now. It’s not like she can’t discover additional features in the future. :)
Hi there, my name’s Halo! I’m a big time Superhero and this is my first big endorsement, so listen up!
Patreon, for those of you who haven’t heard of it before, is like Kickstarter for microtransactions. Instead of funding one off projects, Patreon is for giving ongoing support to independent artists you enjoy. It creates a steady source of revenue they can come to depend on to help support their projects or even just pay their bills so they can concentrate on making more of what you love.
If everyone who read the comic pledged $1 per month (much cheaper than XBOX Live, a monthly subscription to Xmen, or A sandwich) DaveB could live in a house made entirely of caviar and ponies. If one tenth of readers pledged that much, he could still make his living off the comic and produce extra pages on a regular basis. Granted he’s doing that right now, but until the Patreon campaign hits a certain level, his saving will eventually erode to the point that he will need to find a full time job. So please consider contributing even a small amount (or a big amount, we’re not picky) to support the comic if you’ve enjoyed it so far, and DaveB will continue to endeavor to improve his art and writing and will keep entertaining for many years to come! Thanks!
Hmm.. why do I get the feeling Sydney is using the ‘save file’ from someone else? (Or an earlier save that rolled over to New Game+?) There’s like 35 glowing bits, and Sydney is holding one to be placed…
Also, there seems to be a active link between Flight and Energy Blast… (FFXIV Bahamut has a link between Flight and Energy Blast too… when he exploded his moonprison mere malms above Eorzea and started showering the continent in Flares…)
Given that the original test of the “PPO” had her calling it the “Pew-Pew Orb”, I’m guessing that the ‘link’ is what makes her airborne beam turn into the ‘splody-slicing beam?
Also, I wonder if there is a connection between the 2 centre-ring points, and the fact that she can use 2 orbs at once..?
Now THAT is a guess that makes sense, since the orbs only connect to the center.
I’m stumped on the PPO/flight connector, since no orb has seemed to work better or differently in conjunction with others.
I have to say I like the previous owner of the orbs. Truesight/flight fan much?
Oh, and #129 / #167 prove she knew the orb provides a beam instead of bursts. Maybe it has options, but she was expecting a beam as shown.
WOW. Dave, you totally ROCK dude.
Opening the book on this becoming the most-commented page to date. Place your bets on how many comment pages will come from it this week.
How about spread on new forum members?
If he updates on Thursday, then we will get less then a week
I’d say 4 pages are guaranteed. Not sure of more.
4 or 5 max.
It’ll die down significantly after today, and thursday we get a new page
Well, we have just hit page 4, and the first day is not even over yet. Although that always does see the bulk of the posts. Any one predicting 6 pages?
Still Tuesday on my corner of the planet, and up to page 5. Any pundits for a 6 comments page bet could make a killing!
Bets are now closed and the results are in. 6 pages total, with 1,081 comments in all*. No payouts. Better luck next time.
* Last comment number 54,268 – first comment number 53,187 = 1,081.
What she gonna spend her skill point on? I vote longer stronger tentacle.
Telepresence ,maybe we could get three or four of her in one picture.
Multiple decoys (or Mirror Images in D&D terms) sure would help survivability in situations where she can’t have her shield up. For instance if needing to interact with a control panel or if she is already committed to using two of the other orbs. Say whilst flying and scanning with her true sight.
The telepresence/flight crosspoint, allowing copies of her to do that perturbing spinny flying thing.
Correction: it is telepresence and gravity control. So the options are wider than you suggest. Once she unlocks that perhaps she can use her control of gravity to simulate the presence of a physical body? Meaning that others would interact with the image as if it had a solid presence. Or perhaps it allows her to use her gravity control on a remote location or individual other than herself?
Just to wager a guess but the main 7 spoke wheel represents “Raw Power Energy Output” “Battery” or something that increases the abilties of all the orbs at once, since they’re not connected to the orbs, but rather connected to a single large hub connected to them.
The other interiors are “Combo” or something that allows them to work together or generate new effects while using both.
The outer ones are unique to each orb and I can’t guess, but the PPO’s circle is likely “Blast Raidus Max” and the line is “Power”
The 4 in shiled is likely “Shield Power”
The Comm Orb likely has 4 in truesight, one in sound transference and one in visual transference
The Hentai Orb I have no idea
The FORB likley has the two as “Speed” and “Control”.
Bleeping no edit, on second thought the PPO’s circle is likely various types of energy beam, and an upgrade for that beam, with the base “Raw power” beam, and cryo, eletric, heat, void, or whatever beam functions as well.
Further notes: The middle reminds me all too much of a clock to be a good thing. The green orb is the only one with the extra large ding in, which we have no idea what it does.
Maybe the large ding lets her control the orb without touching it?
or the middle could make it blow up or call down whatever race made it. personally i find it more curious to not the green orb is the only one that has the odd nodule they all share (the one that kinda looks like a thrown ball/comet) active.
note*
the middle has two dots lit up and she is currently able to use two orbs at once
Seeing as those lines aren’t really connected to anything, I suspect it’s the level up bar. Not sure if it means she has two upgrades available, and the center bit is the level up bar, or the ring of dots is the minor/major part and the center bit the major/minor part (ie, 7 dots = 1 chunk, 7 chunks = one upgrade).
Maybe it has a ‘vibrate’ function? That would explain why she seems to have more powers unlocked than she has demonstrated. Not the kind of feature you demonstrate at a job interview. Well, not when applying to become a police superhero, anyhow.
Holy crap! It’s a freakin’ skill tree! That’s simultaneously awesome and dumb! It’s crazy stupid awesome! DING MOTHERFUCKERS!
So that whole bit about Halo’s shield blocking some things and not others is making more sense now.
“FILL THIS TREE TO HEAR BUT STILL BLOCK SONIC DAMAGE.”
Makes more sense. Too bad the H.U.D. doesn’t actually explain what each node does or how much experience she has to spend.
It would be Stupid Useful if Dabbler could use her Super Genius Powers(tm) to work out what even some of the node options are, based on…Magic Stuff(tm).
Quick! Grab the green one and see if its power is to explain what’s going on here!
Heh
Go, Go, Exposition Orb!
That amused me, but ‘many a true word spoken in jest’ is a possibility here. Access to an alien database (or all of them in a Galactic-Wide-Web) would be a phenomenally strong super power.
I just realized that Achilles has a benign case of what Sydney was calling “bad powers” before. Just as Wolverine is always getting wounded so they can show his regeneration, Achilles is constantly going to have his clothing torn up. It’s the only way to show that he was unharmed by something hazardous.
yeah, a super that constantly end up half naked, kinda make you wish a women got that power, immaright?
I’m certain it has crossed Math’s mind, more than once.
More’s the point, this case of Bad Powers is EXACTLY why he kept a bag of marshmallows in his front pocket when going to a firing range.
Really, Achilles? Really?
Is the center a node ?
Love to know the tentacle and true sight connector nodes function. That must be a weird one.
Everyone levels a few times quickly at the start. Over the next year we should see this a few times.
How many points does she have to allocate?
I would imagine it gives her the ability to physically touch things with telepresence, since she pointed out not being able to do so.
So, would it be the Hentorb or Telepresence that let her remote-shield?
(FORB + Hentorb to group-fly? Useful for evac of civilians, team-members without travel powers and/or cameraman (see #7!))
I wonder what’s with the grey streaks that don’t connect to anything.
If we’re all agreed on this being a fabulous skill tree, greyed-out circles are inaccessible upgrades. But if you look at forcefield/flight/PPO, there are hidden paths in grey.
Two on flight look like power expansions, but the three long ones look like new paths, major unlocks, or abilities that tie between orbs.
They just haven’t been unlocked yet. Some skills aren’t available until you get to a specific level or get a specific skill to unlock them.
Any chance we can get a separate ( and larger ) image of just the skill tree for download?
I was just thinking that the whole first panel, minus the word balloon, would make an awesome wallpaper!
There are a lot of calls for that, and it looks like DaveB is considering it. I think it would make an excellent vote incentive or Paetron reward.
On a slightly random side note if Sydney’s flight orb or Shield orb gives her less wind resistance, I wonder how fast Maxims could go while carrying Sydney so that she’d be in her field is influence. Or maybe her flight has an area of effect that would make others be able to achieve faster speeds/possibly space flight while with her.
*Maxima
… if she runs from it will the pattern chase her?
Want to see it chasing her doing hologram demonstrations of the orb powers.
Need to fill the point between ppo orb and tentacle orb for lightsaber.
Squiggly light sabre.
Lightwhip.
One day you must release the skill tree/web diagram with the spoileriffic text layer. IT MUST HAPPEN. ONE DAY. That is all.
Has the author or any viewers read the Manhwa webtoon ‘The Gamer’ The skill tree reminded strongly of that series.
I haven’t but it’s not a bad premise. I’ll have to bookmark it for later.
The The True Game is an older novel (and sequels) that is well worth adding to a to-read list. I mention it in the context of Monday’s update because there is a similarity. In that the appendix lists the nine (ish from memory) basic powers that people can be born with. And charts out how the various inherited combinations of those powers can translate into other types of powers.
So someone who inherits mild telekinesis and charisma might become a Herald. Who can levitate into the air (self-levitation via telekinesis) and project his voice to everyone in sight (vibrating the air with telekinesis) and convince others of the rightness of his regent’s cause (using his charisma*).
I know I have mentioned this book before, but even coming back to it years later it is still fun to read through the power combinations and see how a few basic elements can create a complex web of interactions and synergies. Much like Halo’s skills grid.
* Of course regents are those with pure charisma power far stronger than mere Heralds, and are able to convince anyone they meet to follow their cause. The best defence for which to be in the employ of an equally charismatic regent.
Oh Dear God, her abilities are powered by RPGs and experience points! We’re doomed.
There have been various speculations on the flight orb, as it has a lot of points in it already. Just one point to bear in mind when discussing this particular orb though. It is mis-named. It is not a flight orb, it is a gravity control orb. So the capabilities may not just be speed and other flight related aspects. It may allow her to control gravity over an area. For instance to make enemies fall up. Likewise, if able to apply it to an area or to other individuals, various manipulations might make it an offensive power. For instance massively increasing gravity and immobilising an enemy or even crushing them under their own weight.
A gravity well big enough could become a practical warp engine. Gravity bends space-time, bending it enough in front of you, you could step across the fold to a spatially distant place, like another planet, effectively traveling at very high speed, even FTL.
With enough imagination you can always find new ways to use this kind of powers. The only question is what did DaveB imagine?
Weaponized gravity orb…
could even Maximia deal with being crushed into a tiny cube?
Size of effect, spread of field…
Indeed, you are so VERY right, this gives a completely new angle … (eh?)… at explaining the complications.
… thinking further, this makes the link between the weapon systems and the gravity control systems potentially the most devastating super attack in her arsenal.
Of course, now that it’s actually had attention drawn to it, I actually notice that ‘level-up-token’ in Sidney’s hand in the last page, when she’s recoiling from Achilles.
The bars between orbs are probably some sort of power-overlap feature. Maybe that means if she fires the Pew-pew orb inside her shields it’ll pass through. The skill branches are obvious enough. I haven’t the faintest idea what that thing in the centre is for.
Oops, well spotted to you too, just a bit earlier than the next post.
Perhaps It’d let her fire explode shots that contain the blast in their own shields?
Then the PPO becomes a more viable option to use inside city limits – she could kill tanks while leaving the buildings intact.
Extra nifty! The little glowy bit in Sydney’s hand appears after she gropes Achillies’ naked buttocks… although I am *sure* the connection is entirely accidental… :)
I went back a page or three to look for the thing you see on her palm in panels 2&3 and it actually was there, but really subtle.
Wow, well spotted. Just barely visible in panels 5 & 6 from last Thursday’s comic. You can see it between the fingers on her down-turned hand.
Is anyone else wondering when Dabbler arrived behind Sydney? She just appears in panel 5 without saying anything.
Naa, the logical assumption is that she simply walked up to take a closer look. We know she was in close proximity when Halo was running around.
Dabbler is probably discreet and experienced enough not to say anything in front of the cameras. But even if she had a chance to form any speculations or conclusions in that short space of time, Sydney has beaten her too it.
Now the $64,000,000 question is this: Assuming you have no idea what any of the open spaces actually *mean*, and you might only have one chance at this so you have to pick now, where do you put it?
I would put it in the large circle attached to the Truesight Orb that looks just like the one all the other orbs has. This has two benefits: First, new functions showing up on that orb are easier to determine without property damage and Second, every orb has that exact same dot so you just might learn what that dot means as well.
Course if that is a “mode change” on the orb, it might disable truesight permanently.
I’m on the HentaiOrb + Energy Blast connecting line myself. Weaponized tenticles….
Truesight seems less likely to cause accidental death and dismemberment to me.
*snicker*
I read that as weaponised testicles.
I wonder if she can summon this display anytime by spinning the orbs arround?
Or does she have to arange them in this pattern.
Also I wonder if this is solid or an illusion.
If it’s solid she could use it in battle.
Secret tehnique: stat shield!
Total WAG (Wild Arsed Guess) about the green unknown orb – That orb is somehow responsible for this display (support AI maybe?) and it is able to act semi independent because it is the only one with the special little circle they all share filled in.
Please, with Dabbler there it’s more like SWAG ( SCIENTIFIC Wild Arse Guess).
XD
…….SHE MUST HAVE LEVEL’D UP!!!
Sphere Grid ala FFX?
So Syd actually levels up?
That is so EPIC!!!
I really like the idea, can you tell? ;)
Oh, and Dave, welcome to PoE. I actually play it in Lieu (was that right?) of Diablo III.
… an achievement tree? “You have unlocked the Ability ‘Really Loud Fart’!
The orbs are obviously a legengary class artifact, that grows with the user, but are soulbound to the owner.
Funny.
The level up occurs after a kiliton(ish) level blast, after also surviving multiple high-energy strikes from Max…
And waits for Max to leave before displaying.
Com orb: Ok guys, the evil golden creature has left. It’s safe now.
Fly Ball: I think our charge could use a buff if she’s going to face more of that.
PPO: perhaps, but she’s hardly mastered all of her current powers…
Hentorb: Eh, still, the boost is merited. Give her an unlock.
+1
Obviously they’re at least some-sort of semi-sentient, as Sydney once thought they were taking a nap.
So, I can really imagine them dialogueing something like that.
;)
Believe it or not, I think that Sydney will end up a lot like The Greatest American Hero, after all, she’s got alien artifacts that only work for her and she’s lacking an instuction manual to use them properly.
The difference is she has already learnt how to fly without wobbling. And has proven to be fairly competent in combat, even without training. Other than both being comical, and then in different ways, I do not think there is much similarity. Amongst other things she strikes me as being competent. Which the other fellow most definitely was not.
Great fan of that series by the way, as is my mum. Although I follow the alien artefacts and no instruction manual similarity exists, I do not see the comparisons extend beyond that. Especially as her orbs seem to be a lot more user-friendly than his suit. Perhaps being designed to operate without a manual. Whereas his clearly either needed someone more capable to operate them or access to the user handbook.
In particular Sydney has figured out the basic functions of 5/7ths of her toys already. And can use them consistently, without them stopping working at a critical moment. And has even demonstrated being able to improvise with them and use them in interesting combinations.
Fair points you made there, I guess it is because I haven’t watched TGAH in 20+ years so I forgot just how klutzy Ralph was, but we never did get to see much in details about when Sydney first got the orbs, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was as bad as Ralph at first.
To be fair, I must admit there was the Great Forest Burning Incident.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought of TGAH after reading this page. :-)
Insanity loves company.
“Where’s the book?”
“I put it down on the rock right here…uh oh.”
“You lost the manual?”
Any chance we could get a clean version of the point map?
Remove the xxx background images?
I mean an image of the level up grid without the background or characters.
Cool, so it’s run off of a skill tree. Neat.
There’s several things I have to say about this comic episode this week:
0) Dave- WOW! I’ve been chomping at the bit waiting to see what the “reveal” was, and this totally exceeds everything I imagined. You, personally, should be yelling “Ding!” on this one.
1) It’s obvious that this is not about Sydney, but actually for the orbs themselves. The fact that the skill trees are partially filled seems a clue to that. The orbs had a previous owner, who allocated points in a particular fashion, and now it’s Sydney’s turn. Kind of like a bonsai tree – one of which is reportedly over 800 years old. They started out weak but have been accumulating abilities and levels of power. Which means the orbs are growing/alive after a fashion.
2) I speculate that the dot she is going to place might be for the next skill that the orbs will focus training. So there won’t be an immediate benefit or visible difference no matter where she places it. As she uses that skill, the orbs become more proficient, until they reach the training certification and she tells them to work on something else.
3) EVERYONE at Archon should be worried about what this skill tree represents. There are many skills that the orbs can potentially do that aren’t unlocked yet, and power levels for skills that are already trained that are not yet achieved. Would you say that, given enough training, the Halo orbs would exceed even Maxima’s levels?
4) People are definitely going to want to whisk Sydney away, and I’m not talking about just Archon for experimentation. There are folks who will want to copy the orbs, and folks who want to take the orbs for themselves. Archon is going to be busy just running protection on Sydney, for a long time to come.
oh, and
5) given a choice between unlocking an absolutely new ability, or powering up an already existing ability, I’d go with the new ability unlock. I like to have as many tools available as possible, personally. And there’s also the two “unknown” orbs, perhaps unlocking a new ability on one of them would identify what they can do.
But I can also see the case for having a bigger protection shield, too. I can’t wait to see how Sydney, an avid gamer, will play this one.
Perhaps those filled spots represent a past owner. Perhaps they represent the fully enumerated set of powers (personal gravity field: check. Field limit at 1.5g for 200 Floobian pounds. Flexible manipulator: check….). Perhaps tapping each flashes up a diagram to explain what the power is. User-doc, as it were, and they just came with the orby version of ‘flying brick’ skills, which Sydney can now customize.
Perhaps the orbs just like colored lights, and trolling their owner (there is precedent for them trolling her).
In previoius comments DaveB has indicated that the relative powers shown between Maxima and Halo are based on Sydney’s capabilities as we meet her. Ie inexperienced and not having developed her powers. Even in that state, she is rated fairly close to Maxima. So I think that she is very much a contender for the world champion super title. In due course.
This is why I discting Halo from Sydney.
Halo is the holders of the orbs, and sydney just happens to be that now.
If Halo can, eventually, outpower big and shiny there, it leaves space for maxima to go evil.
OMG Sydney is a Final Fantasy X character. LOOK AT HER SPHERE GRID!
Well there’s one thing the skilltree does for sure: It generates comments, 274 in less than half a day!
Way to go Dave.
Only a few pages had quite as many posts in such a short time. The one where DaveB asked advice on guns springs to mind.
I know that some gun sights have complex HUDs. I wonder if there are any that have a remote similarity to this? The central arrangement is reminiscent of an advanced sniper sight to my eye.
this reminds me o some video games
Ding indeed. I jumped in on page 3 so sorry if there are posts about this earlier –I will be checking those in a bit. Unknown green sphere has a dot in the dual lined offshoot that none of the others do. To me this suggests a self-activated power option, which fits well if the assumption that the green orb is a healing power. After all, she eats hazardous sauces and takes same to the eye and recovers in the course of a couple hours –as someone who took a pepper spray shot in a demo it can take significantly longer for some soft tissues to be back to normal.
With the double lined offshoot being assumed as independent –or perhaps continue doing so while hand is elsewhere– I would definitely place this to the double-lined flight option. That way she can shift to PPO and FFO while the “autopilot” holds a hover or keeps a “follow” action going.
Also I don’t think the slots inside the septagram are place-able. They probably represent overall control of known functions concerning the orbs and therefore she get a “bleep” denied if trying to place there. The outside slots are skills, the inside are like stats that modify based on her usage. Flight and FForb are the most advanced while the outside slot between FForb and PPO suggests a learning phase on how they interact best…
So she didn’t level so much and earn an enhancement point — I play DDO and that’s how the trees work there. ;)
You will certainly pick this up when you have your read-through of the earlier comments, but have a closer look at panel 3 of this comic page. You will see that Halo has a ‘glowy thing’ hovering above her hand. Which everyone who has spotted it, including myself, takes to be an unspent power up.
The majority of commentators feel that because there are already a lot of powers lit up it represents previous level-ups from earlier owner(s). Which is an entirely plausible view to take.
Personally that does not sit well with me, and I think that those points are either the ‘default’ starting points that the orbs come with. Or that she had a batch of unspent initial points which were allocated based on actions she attempted with the orbs.
Once that process had been completed, she has now done something significant to start unlocking the rest of the powers the hard way. The most obvious contender being absorbing a significantly powerful attack.
But others include modifying a basic power (the force field) to operate in a new way (increasing its area to protect others). Or it could even be something more subtle, such as demonstrating a willingness to openly use the abilities in the protection of others. Representing being granted extra powers through displaying moral character. A truly super heroic way of levelling up.
Re-reading your post, I think I was mis-reading it by placing too much emphasis on the ‘she did not level up’ and not properly taking in the line that followed it. So the initial part of my reply is unnecessary, as you clearly did spot the fact she had an unspent point in hand. Sorry about that.
2/7 isn’t close enough to the number of full orbs out of the number of viewable orbs to be an absolute fit, but it is close enough to be … intersting.
I accept the possibility that you can’t put dots into the central structure. I don’t back it myself but I accept it.
Well, I gotta say I am excited, especially about the “Flyball” Grav Orb and the PPO’s special-looking upgrades.
I think the PPO has Blast Shape Skills in that Circular one, basic being a Blast of whatever energy, then a flexible laser, perhaps a ray effect (straight spear of energy) a cone would be badass, perhaps a burst that explodes around her? Cannae wait to see those.
I really dig the hidden Grav Orb (GOrb?) skills, I’d say the first two would likely have Speed and Maneuverability, and like was mentioned above, perhaps the hidden ones allow her to control the gravity of other objects and people, like the upgrades are to do with size and range.
Did anyone look at the single-skillpoint offshoots on each Orb, the ones with the 2 lines linking, and think those could be the Non-Tactile Modes for Each Orb? If Syd can move each Orb with her Mind, that could allow her to aim and attend with each Orb without touching! Also, you might notice the Green Unkown Orb has that 2-lined single-skillpoint offshoot skilled into, so the Passive Effect it would normally add is being passively added, perhaps it increases Physical Capabilities? That would explain Sydney flipping Amorphous without having very much muscle and only gripping the Tongue, and her Reflexes might also be empowered.
Also, Achilles is really rather short, he’s only a few inches, (2-3) taller than Sydney. Dang.
The previous page has him significantly taller then Sydney. I think in this page Achilles is further away and has a force perspective of looking shorter then he is. In the cast page he’s 5′ 10″ while Sydney’s 5’0″.
On a side note, has anyone thought of trying to attack Achilles heel.
I’m thinking that the double line single nodes ismore of a primary ability of the orb. but yeah, I noticed each orb has just one double line.
I would say the Orbs themselves would give the primary power, if you notice, all but one of the double line single skill slots are empty, and the one with the slot filled has unknown properties, which leads me to assume a passive bonus, Physical prowess being a damn decent passive imho
I am putting my money on the suggestion that any double lines indicate that both hands are required to activate an ability. The green mystery orb has a flashing light in its single point skill that has two lines connecting to it. So, if the theory is right, she should experiment on a wide variety of tasks holding the green orb in both hands. Any new ability that is discovered she should then try one handed, given that there is also a single-line ability flashing from the green orb. Once either has been discovered it should give a clue as to the nature of the mystery orb, and the other will be easier to unlock. Likewise with the brown mystery orb, but only one hand should be needed for any of those new flashing ablities.
So now Sidney has managed to access her skill tree for her orbs.
….. Why do I feel this is a bad idea.
Ok all I could think when I saw this at first was Sphere grid from Final Fantasy X and the evils of trying to get max stats on it
