Grrl Power #240 – Shock and Aw come on!
Sydney’s genre savvy may work against her one day, but not right now. It was a lot for Atomic Bombshell to hope for anyway, but at least it looks like the bad guys are starting to use some teamwork. It may be too little too late, but they could always turn it around.
Maxima does seem to be operating on a whole other tier, but she does have her limits. Bombshell could definitely hurt her if she caught her flat footed, but right now she’s just hovering up there with her power pool pumped into armor, making her about as tough as Supermanonium.
I’m doing enough double pages lately it really makes me feel like I could almost put out 3 pages a week, but then I go and have bad art day or it takes me a few hours to warm up and I wind up redrawing a bunch of panels and it feels like I can barely get two regular pages out. But overall it seems I’m speeding up little by little. Well, at least while the backgrounds aren’t changing all that much. As soon as we get past this parking lot and I have to start doing a bunch of new interiors. :P Actually what I really need to do is stick to the two pages a week and any extra time I have left over use that to learn Blender or UE4 or something when that comes out so I can make 3D sets and cars and guns all the other stuff I don’t like drawing.
That was weird. I scheduled the comic and it didn’t post. There was a message in the WordPress backend that said “Missed Schedule” which isn’t helpful. How about you keep trying until the post goes live dummy? Oh well.
<— If you enjoy the comic, consider supporting it via Patreon. Or buy something via the Amazon referral link. Or do both.
Also, I’m not sure if it’s been discussed yet or not, but what is that one thing attached to Max that got reviled after AB hit her with her chitty-chitty boom-boom bolo?
That is her hand cannon gun in the under the arm holster she uses. Cannon because it is probably a cut down pistol variant of the same thing Peggy is shooting…
IIRC Dave said it uses a .445 round. He’s got a sketch of it on his Deviantart account
.577 Tyrannosaur Rounds to be precise
https://youtu.be/eP5ndJu3ny0
Gimmee a standard big game huntin’ .454 webley converted to use APDS UDep penetrators, and I’ll be a happy camper any day of the week. And in dire need of a serious wrist brace.
.577 actually. Here’s one sitting next to a .308 Winchester. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/dc/577_Tyrannosaur_and_308_Winchester_Compared.jpg
To be honest, I would have expected her to be carrying something like this badboy right here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea_Q8C_67jY
Surprised you didn’t use a .700 nitro express for her hand cannon…
Taking a rifle round and putting it in a pistol generally isn’t a good idea. For instance using a .700 nitro express in a short barrel means that you would get an impressive muzzle blast as a lot of the powder would be burnt after the bullet had left the barrel, but the muzzle velocity and power would be relatively low.
In a cartridge designed for a long barrel you want to have a lot of relatively slow burning powder that can accelerate the bullet for as long as it remains in the barrel. While in a pistol cartridge you use fast burning powder that can accelerate that bullet as fast as possible over the short length of the barrel. Any powder that does not help accelerating the bullet will be shooting out the barrel as a violent muzzle flash that can obscure vision, help pinpoint the shooter, and is generally annoying.
The physical dimensions of the cartridge also decides what size the gun will be. In this case I think Max carries an automatic pistol that has a magazine well in the grip. This means that the larger the cartridge used the larger the grip will be, and Max might be a big girl but she’s not a gigant.
Just to give some idea of the sizes we’re talking about here’s some pictures.
First is a picture of some handgun cartridges: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CartridgeComparison.jpg#mediaviewer/File:CartridgeComparison.jpg
Of special interest here are (from the left), 1, 4, 5 and 6.
No: 4, 5 and 6 are all very common handgun cartridges, the .45 ACP, .40 S&W and the 9x19mm (also known as 9 mm Parabellum, 9 mm Luger, 9 mm NATO).
No: 1 is the .50 Action Express, known for being the cartridge used by the .50 Desert Eagle from Magnum Research.
The interesting thing here is that the physical dimension of the .50 AE. It’s so long that to accommodate it the grip has to be so big that a lot of people find it way to large for their hands. Now lets take a look at some more powerful cartridges.
Lets compare the 500 S&W, .50 Beowulf and the .50 AE: https://imgur.com/gkuJdvJ
I don’t know if Max could get a grip on a pistol designed for the 500 S&W or the .50 Beowulf, but Anvil probably could. It would be possible to design something around either one of these or some thing similar, but it would be BIG.
So, how about the .700 Nitro Express?: https://imgur.com/KnTRTus
Single shot, or double bore I can visualize, but in a automatic pistol? Only Mr. Amorphous would be able to hold it. And then it’s that thing about barrel length…
If she was carrying a revolver then the grip wouldn’t be the problem, but the scaling the cylinder up for a biggame cartridge like the nitro express would make it impractical to carry due to bulk.
At one point it was explained that her pistol is a single shot gun and she uses her super speed to reload it
OK. I missed that.
I would assume she’s using the .577 specially loaded for her Pistol (which looks almost as long as the stereotypical sawed off double-barrel shotgun) Peggy looks to be a bit of a Gunsmith so not too hard to imagine her making special handloads.
From the picture on this page it looks like the gun isn’t very long. She’s carrying it in a shoulder holster up under her arm and it doesn’t seem to protrude below her elbow.
Given that it’s probably a single shot model (thanks for the info Ivell) It’s possible to use some kind of extremely fast burning powder creating immense pressure.
I was going by This picture of it and it’s proportion to her hands.
https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/316
It was discussed on the first page, and don’t believe anyone would revile that reveal :P
That’s the ammo half of her shoulder holster. She has a custom built break action single shot pistol chambered for the .577 Tyrannosaur rifle round, which is the single largest bullet available below cannon rounds. Only someone with super strength could even pull the trigger, since it has several hundred pounds of pull by design. A most intimidating weapon that gives Maxima another lethal option when she doesn’t want to use splash damaging plasma attacks.
Actually, the 20x110mm Hispano is larger than the .577, but still isn’t a round fired from a cannon. It’s fired from a sniper rifle that takes a team of men to carry and fire, and due to its recoil it’s equated to be like firing a miniature rocket launcher.
Assuming it’s not a hoax/only-exists-on-the-internet-thing, I think the .955 JDX (I have no real interest in unusable bullets, might have the name wrong)) might be a wider bullet, but I have no idea how long the case is.
The .950 JDJ is a real rifle.
A demo video if you’re curious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rKHXTsDcco
Ah, no. Given that Max is a big girl, the size of that cartridge isn’t bigger than a .50AE. Still a pistol round.
Or, you know, not.
.5 inches is less than .577 inches, which is what caliber is measured in. Also, the 577 Tyrannosaurus round is about twice the length of the .50AE round, which translates into a LOT more power.
Actually there are many rounds larger then the .577 that fall well short of cannon rounds, particularly when you get into antique firearms. I use muskets in competitive shooting that fire a larger caliber and higher weight round then the .577, from a .584 in the enfield musket up to a .895 in my smoothbore musket. In addition the pistol I use in competition is a single shot .720 flintlock.
While these are not modern rounds, there are rifled shotguns(or slug gun) designed for shooting primarily slugs, which are also larger then the .577.
And I should add, here I am hoping that the popping in the back was the sound of a belt and a good bit of the back of the pants going away. Nice longshot and zoom in by the press …and…
“Live tonight, Archon fighting to live up to their statements … and oh my, it’s a full moon out tonight!”
Heh heh, a Golden Moon :D
Rarer, and more treasured/sort after, than a Blue Moon :P
I read that as “popping her back”, which for someone of Maxima’s strength would take some doing. Either Hiro or Anvil are likely the only supers with the strength to carry it out.
For the mental image you now have of Maxima and Anvil face-to-face while they “pop each other’s back”, you’re welcome…
Great. Near-fatal nosebleed. Thanks loads…
+1
Oh ye poor souls with your weak constitutions. =OP
Syndromes prototype robot when it was fighting Mr. Incredible… he twisted wrong and threw out his back, but the robot picked him up and tried to rip him in half, thus stretching his back and popping it back into place!!..great scene..
So di I, but I mean that with actual pain (an unusual situation for Max) she might not notice a bit of breeze back there since the cause of the pain had already passed through the clothing area…
Obvious fan-service is obvious. . . .
This is a blatant example of exploitative fan service!
And I’m OK with that!
You do realise it hasn’t revealed much more than what was already on display, don’t you?
Your point being? Any increase in fan service is still an increase.
… and delicious.
Halo’s a bit off on her connection to anime. If this were anime, it’d have blown every shred of clothing off her except a tiny band over the *ahems* and the destroyed-jeans equivalent of a fig leaf. X3
Considering what Maxmia has done to a tank in the past (on TV) being able to kill a tank isn’t that big of a deal to her.
Another bi-weekly dose of more random thoughts:
1) I hope he who-is-not-officially-named-yet-and-thus-doesn’t-appear-on-the-who-who’s-list and AB realize the cost of that shirt is going to come out of their license plate making earnings.
2) Looks like AB flunked basic anatomy! People eat with their mouths, not their torsos.
3) Expressions (all panels), not to mention AB’s deflated balloon look (second to last panel are just one of the reasons the drawing (and the comic in general) is awesome.
4) If there’s anyone who understood Leon’s “phrasing” reference…
5) or what AB is “daring”, I could use a lifeline over here.
6) Was it supposed to be ironic that a bola bomb was wrapping around Maxima’s stomach just as she was warning everyone to be careful?
7) I could be wrong about this, but I wouldn’t think a pair of bola bombs would do much damage to anything gold-plated.
Th-th-th-that’s all folks (t least for now).
Number 4 is Leon hinting at that the phrase “stood in her own fallout” could be misinterpreted, in interesting ways…
Number 5 is easy…
Panel 10 – H: “And don’t you dare even have the gall to look surprised.”
Panel 10 – AB Looking shocked: “A-WHAAAA?”
Panel 11 – H: “I said don’t you dare! Anvil! Get her! She’s daring!” [to look surprised]
#5. In the previous panel sydney says “dont you dare be even have the gall to look surprised” then AB looks surprised, so she is “daring.”
#5: D’oh! I never claimed to be the sharpest tool in the drawer. Caught the dare/daring in the last panel and forget the dare in the previous one.
2) Don’t make me get a trout.
6) She was to careful to dodge AB’s throw but got caught flatfooted by Chia-pet’s TK guided redirect.
7) Gold plated: easily, whatever Max is: not so much.
2) But I like trout (especially to eat it…
with my mouth).
6) That was my whole point. She got caught flatfooted while warning everyone to not let their guard down. Not very good leadership by example, IMHO.
2) ::Casts “Death by Troutrage”::
6) By example you might have a point, but technically you can be careful and still get caught in a trap
Not flatfooted. That would be “Wth???” or “How the…?” She stopped curious that the attack she had effortlessly evaded while leading changed its nature at the last second. Remember that they had followed a set trajectory and I believe she was able to judge the power levels in the blasts so knew it was just a routine dodge. She is a general who assesses a new component to the attacks against her, namely that teamwork was being applied in the tactics and coordination of enemy powers. She has no need for fear, being able to stand up to Halo after all, lol. As for leadership, in the middle of an unexpected hit, she is directing another agent to deal with the threat to others, very calmly.
I think A Bomb tried throwing a couple other bombs at Max without success. Halo ‘denied’ one a couple strips back and I think AB had one in the initial volley. Max didn’t expect it to loop back.
The “phrasing” reference from Leon is about Maxima standing in her own fallout. The major association that John or Jane Q. Public would have for fallout would be “Nuclear fallout”. Leon’s trying to get Sydney to be conscious of how the public could take what she says.
Really? I thought it was an Archer reference….they love saying “Phrasing!” whenever someone says something with a double meaning.
As I have no idea what these “Archer” references that pop up every now and then actually refers to I would be very interested in a hint…
Archer is an animated Spy comedy on FX. It is named after the main character, Sterling Malory Archer, usually just called Archer by his coworkers. As far as Archer himself, he is basically James bond with the personality of Charlie Sheen. It is an incredibly funny show and I highly recommend it as the first four (out of five) seasons are available on Netflix.
Archer is seriously one of the funniest shows on TV. The humor is usually pretty dirty so I don’t get a chance to reference it too often though. Luckily if you haven’t seen it there’s 5 seasons of it to catch up on now.
It is on my todo list. I honestly don’t watch as much TV as I used to.
Got rid of the TV a few years back, so I’m a bit out of the loop when it comes to series…
Haven’t got much time for anything other than the news and the guilty pleasures of Elementary and for some reason Grimm. Luckily these are on hold right now and I do my best to avoid being trapped by something else.
Do you want to bust a gut laughing? Because that’s how you get a busted gut, by watching Archer.
Hahaha! The last two panels we so much fun!
Also, I lost my internet last Tuesday, and finally got it back. So I missed a few days. :(
had to remind myself that, before I accused DaveB for posting too many new pages. ;)
Shame on you for suggesting that there could be such thing as too many pages of Grrl Power.
Mmmm. Shiny girl abs.
Yeah, rubbing Maxima down with oil would be somewhat superfluous, wouldn’t it?…
Oh god she would be blinding in sunlight.
It’s been done.
I really don’t blame Syd. It’s akin to being hit with a napalm fire hose.
Polish?
WD40?
Beeswax?
It’s not what you apply. It’s how much fun you have imagining Dabbler applying them.
prints this comment and frames it on the wall
You’re too kind, thank you.
She’s impervious to normal damage soooo…. you could slather just about anything on her. Molten silver might be fun for contrast…
ZOMG Maxima abs. I’ll be in my bunk.
…You and some undisclosed number of Harems…
Besides, do you think the gods of dramatic convention would let a character as cool as Maxima’s “last words” be, “Guided?”
Really?
Technically, her last words would’ve been “…don’t let your guards down.”
“Guided?” would’ve been her last *thought*.
No, she said “Guided?” out loud, whether it got transmitted over the coms is another matter
Exactly, tailed balloons = speech, clouds with bubbles = thought
Bonus points for anyone describing radio chatter, yelling, distortion due to portal/disorientation, signing, casting, and chanting.
First, love the comic, style and story.
Could you give us a short process list on how you make your comic, the technical side?
I.e. pencil sketch, ink, color, then scan into computer, all done on computer, or a mix of both?
For the parts done on computer, what software(s) do you use / like best.
There’s lots of “how to draw in xxx art program”, so I’m not looking for a tutorial, I’m just wondering what you like to use, paper and/or computer.
I do have one question, back on #236 Recon (perpetratin’ evil? … got to make that into a T-shirt) Sydney is holding purple shield and yellow true sight in the middle panel (subtle, letting us know what orbs are active), in 3rd from last she apparently uses the true sight, but we don’t see what happens, I assume she was just checking out skull cape, but in the 2nd from last panel the yellow orb is not in her hand, but above it , also I thought the yellow ray was part of the telepresence not the truesight.
I was kind of hoping the crying man would take a swipe at Sydney only to find out that was the telepresence end and Sydney was elsewhere.
I’m also hoping, after that page (I kinda like the crying man character’s style) maybe he’s more of a lone vigilantly type scoping out the competition on both sides as opposed to being an actual bad guy / evil.
Keep up the great work!
When you see two yellow orbs, the one above her hand is the telepresence projector (part of the yellow orb) returning to her. Apparently, it can go through the force field without difficulty, but anything not sourced in her orbs is blocked.
Something just occurred to me. How does Max manage her nails and hair? They’re clearly just as tough as her skin, but they’re well-trimmed. Achilles may be “frozen” at the point where his powers kicked in, but I haven’t seen any indication that Max is the same way. Does she have to use a diamond nail file? A plasma torch? You mentioned in the commentary that all her energy is focused on her armor right now, so maybe she can just turn it off?
Well, if her armor can’t be entirely de-powered, for her nails she could use diamond dust coated files to shape her nails, and it could be argued that Dabbler has developed some form of specialized clipper for her hair.
Or Maxima could pump up her strength and superspeed enough that she could individually bend and break hairs to approximate the effect of a clipper. Similar work-arounds could be achieved using her blast, if her control is sufficiently developed with it. It could lend an entire new meaning to ‘power-trimmer’.
Stated that she can drain abilities to funnel into others. Drain armor to fuel strength and her hair should be cut-able.
her powers work something like a “point pool” that she can shift around to suit her needs. (it’s also why she can’t fly, take atom bombs in the teeth and shoot her version of the Over-Nuke all at the same time.) As mentioned about more intimate encounters, she can basically drain her powers to Human levels for things like that.
Then the perfect time to kill max is in the bathroom.
Man, getting sniped through the ladies’ room window while trying to piss would be the most embarassing death ever.
Didn’t that happen in an episode of Bones?
I think that was a truck driver in an outhouse.
No, fairly sure it was with Booth’s old sniper buddy, can remember them looking for a mens toilet until Bones pointed out that it was a women’s toilet, and she ended up acting as spotter for Booth
I am pretty sure the artist has said she can turn up and down her powers at will. perhaps her bace line is not that strong and she apps in up in combat.
They sit at three normally. She can up one to five by reducing others to one. Increasing her power to an unquantifiable level can be done by also tapping into her reserves.
*if I remember right*
She can shift them around to make it easier but still would probably require a powerful industrial cutting tool of some kind since her body seems to be more than human by its very nature and that is separate from the “Powers Pool” thing which seems to be made up of energy/TK based powers that overlay/enhance her crazy gold bodies “natural” abilities.
Looks like Max might have lost a round to the bola blast. Only two of the three visible shell sleeves on the holster are intact.
Good eye.
Not really but the glasses help. :p
that might be the round that’s in the pipe
I doubt it. That’s poor gun handling and Max could draw, load, empty the chamber, field strip and clean the weapon, and return it to it’s holster before the bullet crossed your mind.
I love her Boob-Omb shirt.
Er… Bob-Omb. Yeah…
I find it funny what happened here, obviously if Max can survive her own uber nuke then its safe to say she can survive that.
Max was ready and prepared for her nuke (remember, her entire outfit survived that perfectly intact, not so much this time)
She wasn’t wearing her own explosion as a belt…
Distance means a lot when it comes to explosives. Sometimes when creating a shaped charge you want a little head space, but we’re talking a few centimeters at max, but most blasting is done the easy way. Pack it tight!
I think ALL damage-dealing superpower levels should be comparative to a tank.
To be fair she was quite a distance to her own explosion, that was literally wrapped around her.
Dayum, girl, them golden abs.
WHAT?!?
Comparing Maxima with a TANK???
Maxima Looks WAY better than a TANK!
but as far as her power-set goes, Max is definitely more effective than a tank. I gotta admit, I love the way her “armor” looks so polished…
“You’re under arrest for assault, destruction of public property and felony-grade daring.”
…Not to mention “Grade School”-levels of “Premature/Unjustified Gloating Before The Smoke Clears”…
…Blatantly adolescent levels of “Unjustified BS-Calling” (AKA: “Pouting/Sulking/Spoiled_Bratt-itude”)…
…Destruction of Clothes Belonging to a Super Who Can Nuke A City – & Whose Past Record Includes Destroying a Mosque…
…Also for using high-explosives to undress “Golden Female 6-Pack”-abs without her consent!
Your Honor, Prosecution moves to waive that last charge, because…
…Dude…
…Female 6-Pack!
IN GOLD!!!?!
This Court’s sympathies are with you, Counselor.
However we cannot ignore the “Lack Of Consent”-issue, here.
Motion Denied.

The mosque was an accident, mostly.
Alledgedly an ‘accident’
Argue the intent all you want…
…All I’m sayin’ is…
…Dude…
…it’s rubble.
Well, it’s quite clear. Maxima is the gold standard of supers…
I just don’t have the heart to pun-ish you for that one.
I do! *pile of Fools Gold bricks lands on Tokumei’s car*
Goldbricking again Adamas? Back to work!
Goldbricking: Giving the impression that you can’t or won’t get the lead outta yer’ ass.
*lead ingot lands on your bike*
How did you know I was a Lead-foot?
Spinnerette uses all of my Tungsten, so you got Lead. =P
Seriously, Halo has a point. Maxima survived a nuclear blast. Did Bang the Bang da-Boom-da-Boom Bombshell not see the press conference? That’s the only reason I can explain her reaction :-l
To be fair it wasn’t point blank or directed but it was kinda a long shot.
And the earlier blast probably wasn’t nuclear, for that matter.
Going on radiation alone I am inclined to agree (else everyone at that press conference who was under that shield when Sydney brought it down would be dying of radiation poisoning). Going by the implosive explosive (an explosion collapsing upon itself and exploding again with much, much greater force) nature of the blast alone, I would not be as inclined to agree (the only things I know of that do that are volcano, nuclear weapons and stars). Combined I don’t know how the hell to classify it,
Either way there was fallout. While people equate that word with nuclear fallout, anything that causes small airborne particles falling to the ground in significant quantities has fallout: industial processes, forest fires, volcanos, large meteorites, comets, nukes, etc.
Semantics! :P
Semantics is the art of meaning. What you are saying here is that there is a difference of meaning between ‘nuclear’ and ‘not nuclear’.
Which, yeah, that’s our point. Calling it a nuclear blast is 1) overstating it (Maxima compared it to a daisycutter, which is a conventional explosive design, and has a smaller though still impressive blast radius), 2) inventing problems that we saw didn’t exist (radiation and long term fallout) and 3) seeking to rouse sentiment against Maxima on false grounds.
Assuming of course radiation can penetrate her shield which is a bad assumption.
Argh! You nerds are all missing the point!
Starting from the first attacker and on down the line it has been pretty clear that every one of the bad guys has been eating Stupid Pills by the handful. There hasn’t been a single one of them who could possibly have thought they could take on Maxima.
There are a number of things we don’t know about the Supervillain Blitzkrieg; where they got so many supers, why they attacked in the first place, what they were trying to achieve, and why they went about it in such an ineffectual way. I very much hope that why they all have been acting so stupid will be explained when we find out some of the answers.
The first guy specifically talked about the press conference, and about the explosion that Maxima made so she could have dramatic backlighting when she gave her Terrify The World speech. There have been a few other comments made by bad guys that seem to indicate that they also saw the press conference.
So what part of Maxima making an explosion big enough to destroy an entire building, and then just standing there in the blast wave and firestorm that explosion generated did all these people miss?
Why would Bombshell think that an attack which would merely rip a tank in half would bother Maxima in the slightest? Why was Hex surprised when her beams did nothing more than attract Maxima’s attention?
I propose that Mr.Deus organized this clown-circus of evil supers to make ARCHON look good. This will improve ARCHON’s PR-rating, which will then reflect well on their next budget review. Remember that Deus Industries sells weapons-tech to ARCHON. They look good, Deus gets richer, everybody wins.
As long as nobody notices the “puppet-strings”.
I think whoever gathered these mooks downplayed the press conference fireworks as “special effects” just to impress the crowd. Also no real information was given on Max’s defensive capabilities. Consider some of the Youtube vids that some thought were real but turned out to be tricks of video.
We didn’t really miss the point but were discussing a whole new subject. Yes it is sometimes difficult to follow if you aren’t used to talking with us “nerds”. Or for that matter people with ADD. BTW nerd is loosing value as an insult especially as the world get more and more dependent on technology. We may not rule the world yet but we keep it’s tech running and improving. Everywhere I go people ask me about things that seem obvious to me like how to I hook up my Blu-Ray?
It’s always a mild surprise that people have difficulty with things that come so naturally.
“How can you not understand this, it’s basic calculus?”
He missed two points I said when Sydney brought down the shields. The blast and fire may have died down by that point but if there was radiation it would not have died down that fast.
I understand you were using hyperbola but you do have to admit the explosion is unusual by conventional, thermobaric, and nuclear standards.
I’m not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but shouldn’t Chia Pet’s thumbnail be painted black? Two comics ago all the nails on his right hand were painted.
1) Good eye, you’re right.
2) I know there’s got to be a Rolling Stones joke in here somewhere, but it somehow eludes me.
Dave B. missed his nails they should be painted black
His hair has stayed green but his nails should still be black
I can see Maxima dressed in her damaged clothes
If I should stare too long she’ll flatten my nose
Exactamundo
I wonder, has there been any speculation on whether or not the unnamed green haired fellow can use his telekinesis to reach inside Halo’s shield? Say, grab her hand and use it to hit herself in the face?
Yes and it’s generally decided it’s unlikely since teleporters can’t get through.
2 different things
Usually lumped under PSI or some other mental power label as having a common source. But I agree. Until we see him or another take a shot, the question remains open. Along with magic and ultra-tech.
The point is: does a TK have to, in normal circumstances, be able to touch what they are manipulating?
Hell, a lot of literature I’ve read classifies teleporting a specialized subset of telekinetic. Not all of it to be sure but a lot of of it. Dave’s interpretation is kind of what matters but until he speaks it were mostly guessing based on opinions we based on what we may or may not have read before.
Actually kind of surprised that it didn’t cause her ammo to misfire. I mean, as she said, it would of torn a tank in half, so that much energy probably could of set off the powder in her bullet casings.
I think one or two did go off.
Now I’m worried that those 2 bullets might’ve gone outward in random directions, & endangered either the press, or some random on-lookers.
Remember,
Ammo, outside of a chamber that holds the casing and focuses the released energy, the casing would fly away opposite the bullet, so 4 projectiles, but at half power (roughly, other variables apply).
Because physics.
So, I should be twice as worried…?
:P
;)
:)
…Twice as worried about the number of shrapnel pieces, but only half as worried about the impacts they make…
It kinda’/sorta’ balances out…
actually the case for the round would be in pieces having not been reinforced by the firing chamber adding unknown number to the projectile count but the force would be far below firing level on all of them with a sum worry level steps down the scale (mass times velocity equals force) slow small items not large fast biggest danger getting burned and cut by casing fragment
Without the support of the firearm’s chamber, a brass case cannot take the pressure of the powder exploding and bursts. Lacking much push, the bullet doesn’t go very far.
But the case itself can be a highly dangerous piece os high velocity shrapnel. Mythbusters did a show about guns or ammo in an oven.
Here is a video of a .50 BMG round being cocked in a micro…
The result? Not very impressive at all… The bullet kind of popped of and barely made it out of the oven, and as I remember it (it’s been months since I saw that clip) a lot of the propellant just sprayed all over without burning.
So I read my drivel, then press submit, and then I see…
Cooked! not cocked… Cooked damn it!
Din’t worry. It was obvious what you meant. :-}
The Myth they were busting involved a regular oven not a microwave.
https://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/02/21/17045722-woman-shot-by-oven-while-trying-to-cook-waffles?lite
I just realized something. Bombshell and this guy are the only ones using teamwork on the enemy team. Maybe they know each other?
Opal as well, she’s on comm duty.
would be funny if Achilies, Amorphous, and Brooke tangled with those three before.
Either has buds or rivals
Since those three were working as Vigilantes before they joined Archon I’d say they’ve tangled and not in the nice way.
Well any pretense they’d had of not being there to murder federal agents just went out the window there with bomb chick’s exclamation about killing Maxima. Not that it was the first use of lethal force against the team.
Between the villains being this willing to kill and the fact that leaving someone unconscious bleeding from the mouth qualifies as “non-lethal,” it’s truly amazing (if) no one has been killed.
Face down and at least the blond Harem is doing triage duty.
Been having the same problem of comics missing their schedule over at Spoofy Randomness; it’s happened three times in the past couple months. Not sure what’s going on with that, but if anyone could enlighten us, that would be great!
You mentioned blender? I can’t give you textures cause they obviously wouldnt match your comic but if you gave me concept art, I could blender/maya up some items…
Depending on what they are, I’m proficient enough that unless you require an HD closup with BluRay player MaxHD tripple XL…
Look point is I can do things whithin reson.
I assume that my email address is accessable to you since your admin, but I wouldn’t know.
Not sure if this has been stated yet, but I spotted a minor error. Sydney is missing the blood on her shirt and cheek bruise. It’s like she took a quick break to change shirts and get some healing magic.
Stated and noted, DaveB has said he will fix it, when he isn’t working on a 3rd page
** Warning Danger Ahead **
Just had an evil foreshadowing. Ms Portal might be Halo’s biggest danger. (and the rest of the team’s if she can see them) if she can make a portal that allows physical passage or even coherent energy she might be able to pop one inside the shield w/Sydney.
If sydney sees that first, the results could be funny. If not she might dodge the initial incoming only to have it bounce around the inside of the shield.
If Ms Portal can serve up dozens of mini-portals at once a zapper or even a gunner shooting through could hit everyone at PB range w/surprise attack.
Imagine also if she puts a portal in way of a hero and when they’ve halfway passed through it, she collapses the portal…suddenly hero in two places.
Yeah, ms Portal can be the most lethal and deadliest person on the field right now.
I look at it this way halo’s orbs > every super power,
as it been stated in the comic supers aren’t naturel ( https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/880 ) and as I see it the “people” most likely responsible for making the orbs are also the “people” most likely for making supers in the first place. so for any super power the orbs have a way to both mimic and counter it because you would never give the lab rats more power then yourself have, tho it may not be unlocked but its there.
so it while it may work the first time it becomes less likely to work with ever upgrade halo gets.
I love this strip. Have chucked some others I used to follow but never this. My one complaint is this: How do I explain to my bosses when I take a sick month to re-read it all? Can I have a note or are you abandoning me to unemployment? Still, if that’s the worst thing I can say, then keep going man, you are doing great work.
Ah but if you tell a doctor this comic is a cure for Depression (choose one into web-comics) and hook him on Grrlpower you might keep your job.
A month to re-read Grrl Power? Woe betide you should you come across Schlock Mercenary.
Yeah well a few days to read the strip, a month to read all the comments again. :)
I would just like to say what a wonderful job you have done with this webcomic. I always feel relaxed and happy after reading it and Sidney reminds me of my sister. You have really added attitude and comedy to action and comic books. Thanks for another enjoyable week.
Heh… Check out the bfr revolver from Magnum research. They made a revolver for using rifle round. So the concept would work. Just need faster powder and a slightly longer barrel. Since the chamber would seal tight on Max’s single shot, you wouldn’t have to worry about gas flaring out from the cylinder. With their technology, they could probably handle the chamber pressure of using a .700 nitro round with a hot load and faster power if they really wanted to. Weight wouldn’t be a factor, so over-engineering wouldn’t be an issue either.
This page is exactly why I like Maxima. I was in a super hero discussion with friends and one thing that came up was how much I dislike heroes like superman. Not his character, his power set. When you have a hero that is THAT powerful, inevitably you have to introduce a villain like Darkseid who is even more powerful in order for there to actually be a threat and some concern for the hero. I hate Darkseid because in just about every encounter, he just leaves. When he and superman come to blows, superman gets injured (blood from mouth, bruises, torn clothes, etc.) but Darkseid just shrugs everything off, never showing a sign of injury. And then he leaves. Not retreats, not captured, he just almost casually leaves. It’s annoying how strong that character is, to be honest.
But Maxima is different. When she ‘stat dumps’ to max out a skill, she’s on par or maybe even stronger than superman (not sure of the answer to that one) in whatever it is she maxed out. But that leaves her lacking in other areas. So when a character it not so unstoppable despite having such an incredible pool of powers to draw from, that’s great! Because then it’s more about the use of powers and strategy than it is about raw power. Makes things more interesting to see what will eventually happen.
what the hell, does that thing shoot a pound of lead or something?!
thats odd, my post did not reply to what i wanted
I just read your description on this on a reread. And I’m imagining what this comic would look like if rendered in UE4… Holy shit. Tags fully popped, as sydney would put it.
If this comic is currently on Harem level of power (power as in awesomeness), it would be boosted all the way up and past maxima straight into Vehemence.
Heck, if done at high skill-level it would soar straight past the commercially produced superhero movies in my estimation. Though I think you might want a small team for that.
In panel 8 Max looks awfully ‘demonic’. Images like that make me wonder how much her powers are linked to Dabbler’s old foe.
