Grrl Power #83 – It’s Adorifying!
This page derailed rather quickly as I wrote it – it was supposed to start off with the General introducing himself and have a joke about her middle name, but the number of gags I crammed into the page make up for it in my opinion.
It would be classier to let someone else point this out in the comments, but I’m pleased that in Sydney’s own fantasy, Wolvie is less that totally on board with the situation. I wrote it, realized it didn’t make sense, then came to my senses and realized it is of course far better that way. Also, Sydney in a dress? Never thought I’d draw that.
I also like that apparently, Sydney thinks that anyone with a number in their name is automatically royalty somehow? That’s what the crown and the Lion King ripoff says to me. What they would be king of is perhaps more of a mystery.
I’m not sure exactly what Arianna is referring to as terrifying, probably either Sydney’s plans to marry a fictional character, complete with “diagrams,” or the thought of her as a parent.
One thing I’ve definitely messed up on doing the comic so far, is that while I’ve discussed Max’s feminism on the cast page and in the comments, I haven’t actually put it in the comic yet, and this page gets a double dose of it. Even a panel of her getting mad at someone for not being able to maintain eye contact with her would have been enough of a set up but oh well, got to start somewhere with it.
that sash belongs to Ras, where did logan get Ras sash
Duh, Wolvie’s getting married! “Something borrowed”, right?
I would really like it if the feminism in this comic went somewhere – I’m already noticing that the women are drawn in a particular way, and there have been a lot of critiques about how, in general, women’s proportions in comics (not just this one) are hypersexualised etc. I’d love for feminism to not just be a joke in this comic. I would love to see more of sydney – who is portrayed much more realistically. I’d like it if maxima doesn’t turn into some kind of… feminist strawman. considering this comic is called grrl power, I would say that’s not too much to ask/suggest…
I can’t promise the comic will ever be a dissertation on feminism or anything like that – I grew up reading superhero comics and that’s mostly what I learned from. That being said, while I’ve mentioned it once or twice, one thing that’s easy to miss at this point is that in this world, super humans look like super heroes. Most of the women we’ve met so far are super humans. I’ve tried to draw more reasonable figures on the other women so far, unfortunately, I don’t know how to draw heavier people at all. The 2 or 3 attempts I’ve made in the comic so far, all men, have been really awful looking I think. It’s just a skill I’ll have to develop as I introduce more non-supers into the cast.
As for Max’s feminism, all I can promise is that I’ll try and keep to my vision of her, which is basically “If I was a woman…” My big concern with her is trying not to make her a man with boobs, which is a complaint I hear lobbied at a lot of strong female characters Max will definitely get some of that though, she’s not the nurturing type, but I intend to make her more complex than a female Duke Nukem.
Dan Hedaya is playing the general? Cool!
This comic has ruined my grades, my job, and my social life- yet i am still the happiest i have ever been. Thank you. Thank you for this wonderful gem of the interwebs. I literally could die happy right now. seriously, someone could come into my house, shoot me multiple times, and i would still be laughing at this through the pain.
You’re… welcome? I guess.
I laughed my balls off here!…Great comic as usual.
Just figured it out. That’s Dan Hedaya, isn’t it.
He seemed like a good fit. I’d be concerned about using his image without permission if I was better at doing likenesses, but for now I’ll just call it an homage.
This is a younger Dan maybe from the 1990’s since he is really in his 70’s right now.
Run like hell Logan!!!
She could have a little bastard. Then the kid would have her last name.
Nah, then it’d be a ‘Fitz-Sydney’. Or worse, a ‘Snow’.
Behavior-wise, ANY kid Sydney has would be a right little bastard.
ILSHTNMSH! on the fourth reading! (This time I’m reading the comments.)
Grrl Power gets my vote for the funniest thing on the web!
Bow tie?
Between this and 124 and 123.
Oh dear.
This totally matches my eventual marriage plans. The bow-tie is optional, as one shouldn’t be too demanding.
Wait, she’s shorter than Wolverine? That guy’s barely five feet tall. Maybe he’s standing on a platform, as part of Sydney’s esoteric wedding plans?
Actually, he is officially (not counting Mr Jackman) 5 foot 5 inches
“And as you can see, he a little bow tie” just like when I marry the Doctor :D
I don’t know why this made me laugh so hard, but it did.
Panel six is awesome. Max is awesome.
A little from column A, a little from column B.
Is it me or does that guy look a lot like Al from Quantum Leap?
Bottom strip is a dangerou mixture of cute and hilarious.
I love how she apparently broke into a lion enclosure at the zoo in order to do that Lion King scene, and the lion is just staring at her like that.
Interesting. You do know, that it is only in WESTERN traditions that the family name is passed through Men? In Japan, it can vary, and has for centuries. It is very common that if a family has only daughters, one of the daughter’s husbands ends up taking the family name. This is especially true if the man is coming from a family with multiple sons.
He has a bow tie…on his chest hair?!
Quick! Will save VS hideous laughter!
I find Adriana’s comment in panel 6 a little perplexing and off-putting. It’s like she’s actually perturbed by the idea of a woman keeping her own name when she marries, and values tradition in a way that even an elderly person would probably roll their eyes at. And yet that’s not the vibe I generally get from her character.
Not sure what’s terrifying about Sydney’s drawing.
I do like how Maxima is kind of a window into how Sydney could be when she grows up. She’s got the orderly discipline to her but also has these moments of snark about her.
that last panel. lol.
